"Many children from low-income backgrounds worldwide fail to master school mathematics; however, some children extensively use mental arithmetic outside school. Here we surveyed children in Kolkata and Delhi, India, who work in markets (n = 1,436), to investigate whether maths skills acquired in real-world settings transfer to the classroom and vice versa. Nearly all these children used complex arithmetic calculations effectively at work. They were also proficient in solving hypothetical market maths problems and verbal maths problems that were anchored to concrete contexts. However, they were unable to solve arithmetic problems of equal or lesser complexity when presented in the abstract format typically used in school. The children’s performance in market maths problems was not explained by memorization, access to help, reduced stress with more familiar formats or high incentives for correct performance. By contrast, children with no market-selling experience (n = 471), enrolled in nearby schools, showed the opposite pattern. These children performed more accurately on simple abstract problems, but only 1% could correctly answer an applied market maths problem that more than one third of working children solved (β = 0.35, s.e.m. = 0.03; 95% confidence interval = 0.30–0.40, P < 0.001). School children used highly inefficient written calculations, could not combine different operations and arrived at answers too slowly to be useful in real-life or in higher maths. These findings highlight the importance of educational curricula that bridge the gap between intuitive and formal maths."

66 years ago today, 2 January 1959, Fidel gave his first post-revolution speech in Santiago; “The begins now … this time it will not be like 1898, when the North Americans came and made themselves masters of our country. This time, fortunately, the Revolution will truly come to power.”

Fidel then began the Caravan of Freedom - a six-day victory parade witnessed by jubilant Cubans all over the country - which made its way slowly through rural Cuba, towns and cities until finally arriving in Havana on 8 January 1959.

For Socialism

Against Capitalism

Capitalism is an economic system based on private ownership and control of the means of production and their operation for extraction of profits from the labor of the working class. The working class, having no ownership or control of the resources and technology required to produce what we need to survive, has no choice but to sell our ability to work. Capitalists purchase our labor power but the wages we receive are only a fraction of the overall value we produce while at work. The surplus value generated by and stolen from workers is the source of profit for capitalists. The capitalist drive to maximize profits is the source of most of the world’s problems.

The working class, who are the vast majority of the population and whose labor produces profits, has no interest in continuing this miserable system of exploitation that only benefits a handful of capitalists. Our needs would be better served by a socialist planned economy directed by the working class in political power. Capitalism has brought forth a socialized system of production with the potential to meet the needs of humanity but first we must get rid of the capitalists who stand in the way. It is now necessary for the working class to overthrow the parasitic capitalist ruling class who seek to continue living off our labor. We need a revolution and we need socialism.

Whenever we speak of the One, the Many usually come into our mind at the same time. Whence, then, we are forced to ask, do the Many come? This question is unanswerable by the consciousness which pictures the Many as a primary datum, and treats the One as only one among the Many. But the philosophic notion teaches, contrariwise, that the One forms the presupposition of the Many: and in the thought of the One is implied that it explicitly make itself Many. The self-existing unit is not, like Being, void of all connective reference: it is a reference, as well as Being-there-and-then was, not however a reference connecting somewhat with an other, but as unity of some and the other, it is a connection with itself, and this connection, be it noted, is a negative connection.

A rise in the rate of profit is always due to a relative or absolute increase of the surplus-value in relation to its cost of production, i. e., to the advanced total capital, or to a decrease in the difference between the rate of profit and the rate of surplus-value.

Ideality only has a meaning when it is the ideality of something: but this something is not a mere indefinite this or that, but existence characterised as reality, which, if retained in isolation, possesses no truth. The distinction between Nature and Mind is not improperly conceived, when the former is traced back to reality, and the latter so fixed and complete as to subsist even without Mind.

- Hegel, 1830

Some time ago Lassalle said: “Only when science and the workers, these opposite poles of society, become one, will they crush in their arms of steel all obstacles to culture.” The entire strength of the modern labour movement rests on theoretic knowledge.

The readiest instance of Being-for-self is found in the ‘I’. We know ourselves as existents, distinguished in the first place from other existents, and with certain relations thereto. But we also come to know this expansion of existence (in these relations) reduced, as it were, to a point in the simple form of being-for-self. When we say ‘I’, we express this reference-to-self which is infinite, and at the same time negative. Man, it may be said, is distinguished from the animal world, and in that way from our nature altogether, by knowing himself as ‘I’: which amounts to saying that natural things never attain free Being-for-self, but as limited to Being-there-and-then, are always and only Being for another.

- Hegel, 1830

Above all, try always to be able to feel deeply any injustice committed against any person in any part of the world. It is the most beautiful quality of a revolutionary. - Che, 1965
