I was halfway up the ladder, ready to trim the old tree branches, when my dog suddenly sank his teeth into my pants and yanked me back—and in that instant, the truth behind his strange behavior began to dawn on me 😨😨
That morning is etched in my memory. The sky was low and heavy, clouds stretching endlessly, the air thick and unmoving. It felt like rain could fall at any second, yet I decided not to delay any longer. The dry branches of the apple tree near the house had to be cut, and the ladder had been waiting long enough. Despite the gloomy weather, I told myself: I’ll do it today.
I leaned the ladder against the trunk and began climbing. But after only a few steps, I felt a strange jolt from behind. Turning around, I froze in disbelief.
My dog was scrambling after me, trying to get onto the ladder. His paws slipped, claws rattled against the metal, and all the while, his eyes were locked on mine.
“What on earth are you doing?” I asked with a nervous laugh. “Stay down!”
I waved him off, but he rose onto his hind legs again, gripping the rungs with his front paws. Then, to my shock, he latched onto my pant leg with his teeth and gave a violent tug. I nearly lost my balance.
“Hey! Are you insane? Let go!” I hissed, trying to shake him off.
But he refused. Bracing his paws against the ladder, he pulled harder, determined to drag me down.
Annoyance burned inside me, but so did something else—an unsettling feeling. Why is he acting this way? Is it a game? No… the look in his eyes was different. Urgent. Warning me: Don’t climb higher.
I tried once more to chase him off, even scolding firmly:
“Enough! Get away from here. Let me work!”
But as soon as I climbed a few rungs higher, he bit into my pants again and yanked. My heart leapt—one slip and I could’ve fallen badly.
Panting, I realized this couldn’t go on. If he kept at it, I might really end up on the ground, injured. I had no choice but to act.
Climbing down, I met his eyes sternly.
“Fine. If you’re that smart, you’ll have to stay on the chain.”
Looking guilty, he lowered his head. Still, I led him to his kennel and fastened him securely. Finally, I thought, I could finish the job in peace.
