There are a couple episodes we never mentioned on social media, not because they weren’t great, but because we are bad at Instagram and Facebook. This post is about one of those episodes, Season 7, episode 9, with our colleague, friend, and new Mennonite Historical Library head librarian, Eric Bradley! We chat genealogy, MHL resources, and about Eric’s journey to goshen and the MHL.

Reminder that we are on break until December when we will be covering some Amish Christmas content and doing our annual “best of” episode! Season 8 kicks off in February- if you have suggestions for content, interview subjects, etc please let us know!

Season 7 has come to a close! (Though we will be catching up on our social media posts the next few weeks….). Our second to last episode was our Discernment Committee selection of Plain Truth by Jodi Picoult. The book, published in 2000, tells the story of the mysterious murder of an infant and the Amish teen accused of the crime.

And last week was our season finale! We got a lot of great emails this season and in our season finale we share some anecdotes and corrections, as well as recent stats and plans for season 8. We will be back in December with some holiday themed content and launching season 8 in February!

Part 2 of our cookbook series came out last week- a conversation about community cookbooks with the delightful ! We chat about our favorite community cookbooks, the purpose of these types of cookbooks, and the quirky “recipes” that makes them very fun to look through. Things like “Better than Robert Redford” cake because the word “sex” is too risqué for a Mennonite cookbook, or the “how to preserve a husband” recipe. Scroll this post to see three versions of that poem from cookbooks in ’s collection. Do you have a different version? We want to see it! Please send, thanks 🙏

Our next ep in our two part Cookbook Series will release on July 23 and focus on non-traditionally-published community cookbooks.

Continuing our social media catchup: a few weeks ago, our episode covering Holy Matrimony was released. This movie was, as the episode title suggests, inexplicable and weird and very fun to chat about. The premise is that a 12-year-old Hutterite boy (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) has to marry his brother’s widow (Patricia Arquette) who is also on the run from the law. We chat state fairs, Hutterites, and much much more

🫣We have once again fallen far behind on our social media posting (and right after getting caught up!) forgive us! This time we will start current and work our way back… Our latest ep came out today, a conversation with Karen Johnson-Weiner, the author of The Lives of Amish Women. We chat potlucks, research, and all kinds of things related to Amish Women- and we highly recommend you read Karen’s book if you are interested in the subject.

Note that we did have some audio issues with this recording, and it is a bit more “echoey” than usual.

Our latest episode is a discussion on the book Reconnected by Carlos Whittaker (). In the book, Carlos reevaluated his relationship with technology by spending 7 weeks without it- including 2 weeks with an Amish family near Mt Hope, OH. We chat about cell phones, which tidbits of advice from the book we might take (or not take), and much more!

Our next episode comes out next week, a snake draft of Mennonite poets!

Episode 6 of our latest season we covered “Only in America” with Larry the Cable Guy, in which Larry spends time with an Old Order River Brethren family. We chat sauerkraut, Brethren, redneck jokes and much much more.

Also, with this post, we are caught up on social media!! Our next episode drops Wednesday, discussing the book Reconnected by Carlos Whittaker.

Episode 5 of our current season was a snake draft! We drafted our favorite/most memorable Christian media from our childhoods, which included a wide variety of books, movies, music, and singing objects (hymnals AND vegetables!) What did we miss that you would have drafted?!

We chatted about Pinecraft and Sarasota, working with filmmakers researching the Amish, growing up gay in the Conservative Mennonite church and much more! Our third ep of the season covered Rosanna of the Amish, a semi-biographical book in which author Joseph W Yoder recounts the story of his mother’s life. We chat early Amish works, corn husking parties, and Amish propaganda. Have you read this book? Let us know what you thought.

The Radicals movie focuses on Michael and Margaretha Sattler (the Anabaptist power couple), starting with their departure from the Catholic church, to joining the Anabaptists, to their martyrdom.
