I asked my kids if they wanted to donate at pray for Turkey and Syria. The question I got was “is it that bad?” The silence is so obvious especially when compared to the Ukraine conflict, when they were asked to donated on fortnite. There was awareness. There was compassion that the world felt and amplified. We are sick of hearing about diversity, inclusion, and equity without action. Tired of the silence that occurred when the people don’t look like you. Let’s do better put your money and efforts where your mouth is. We don’t seem to be seen by you. But you should question yourself, are you motivated by humanitarian efforts only when they share similar values on the surface, are you motivated to donate more when there is a perceived enemy to fight, can you help a fellow human just because the need it and acknowledge that it may not motivate you as helping your “own tribe”? Let’s be better as a society. Turkey and Syria need us. They gave us Rumi, our faiths, western civilization, love, kindness, and faces that show you how to have hope even when we don’t think we can handle and ounce of what they are going through.

I hiked not to get away from it all but for the love of it. There is a huge difference between coping and self care. Doing something I loved without running away allowed me to be more intimate with my inner world and cultivate deeper joy, gratitude, and peace without the initial steps of let go of what I was running from. I’m going to try to be more mindful of intent and hope that even on the days where my initial reaction is “I need to run away” I can attempt to switch it to “I’m moving towards joy.” I do know that we shouldn’t run away from our problems that they need to be faced but I think breaks are merciful to oneself and others.

Anger needs recognition and healthy escape, not everyone has the safety to express it depending on age, immigration status, ethnicity, space, gender, social status ect… So because I am a person who held back the expression of anger and frustration for various reasons throughout my life I am grateful to have had a head start on how to process it and move through it. I used to bottle it up, let it fester in me, ignore it, swallow it. That’s not helpful. Not only did it make me invisible to myself, I ignored the gift of recognizing the things in my life that needed to change. My goal is to try to acknowledge my anger, see what I can change within myself, and let people own their own stuff. The final new step I have is being okay with disappointing someone especially if it’s because I am taking care of myself. My healthy releases of excess energy are: running, breath work, laughing with a friend, journaling, reaching out to a safe person, and salat. And of course learning to put your heart in control of your anger- Land of Light Journey through the Dark Realms- a fantasy story that explores anger, greed, and ego.

If we don’t know our own history we allow the dominate culture to justify their actions and define us. It is so important to learn our human histories from various voices and perspectives. And to reorient ourselves to our authentic selves not to pleasing the dominate culture.
