Military Airstrike Hits Myanmar School, Dozens of Students and Teachers Feared Killed or Injured
YANGON, Myanmar – May 12, 2025 – A military airstrike on a school in Depayin Township, Sagaing Region, on Monday morning reportedly killed or injured approximately 50 students and at least two teachers, according to a rescue worker involved in relief efforts in the area.
The attack targeted the school in Ohtain Kwin village around 9:55 AM. Two female teachers were reported to have died at the scene.
"The bombs were dropped directly onto the school. Two teachers died instantly," a rescue worker from Depayin Township stated. "It's possible that around 50 students were killed or injured. There are also children whose bodies haven't been found. Some children have had their eyes dislodged; others sustained head injuries. They are currently being transported by vehicles. The situation is dire."
As of the latest updates from the scene, the dead bodies of 11 children, including students, and the two teachers had been found. Numerous other children were reported to have suffered injuries, and rescue operations were said to be ongoing.
Although the Terrorist Military Council announced a ceasefire from May 6 to May 31, ethnic armed organizations and revolutionary groups have stated that it is carrying out airstrikes, shelling with heavy weapons, and offensives across the country.
