Did you know the squid we catch here on the south coast only live for about one year? In that short time they hatch, grow to full size, breed, and then die. So every squid we catch this season wasn’t even alive last year, crazy 🤪

I bought some new stuff for fishing for bass in the river!

Picked up a few new bits for something I’ve never really tried before which is targeting bass in the rivers with a lighter setup using craw baits and small SPs!

Craw baits have been around for years in bass fishing, especially in the rivers. They’re designed to imitate crayfish/lobsters, which are a great meal for bass. The slow, twitchy presentation along the bottom really triggers those instinctive strikes, especially from more cautious fish. These also float up too which is very cool!

For this type of fishing, I’ve bought myself a new Major Craft Ceana rod (5–18g) paired with my Shimano Stradic 2500, spooled with 18lb braid and a 14lb fluorocarbon leader. I purchasewd some weedless Decoy Violence Jigheads and these should work perfectly with the ‘Nikko’ craws I got. This setup will be perfect for working close to structure and in current as these small baits will be under 15g.

The plan is to scale things down from my usual sea fishing gear, go lighter, and really work the lures where bass love to hunt. It’s a completely new style for me, but from what I’ve read and seen, this method can be absolutely deadly.

Now it’s just a matter of getting out there, figuring it out, and hopefully finding a few river bass willing to play ball!

Here it is the final video from Panama. We set off chasing big fish, armed with poppers, live baits, and no real idea what we’d run into out there. As soon as we hit the offshore marks we were surrounded by dolphins, and not just dolphins... Then it happened my popper gets absolutely smashed by a huge yellowfin tuna and the rest is history.

Give this one a watch people, its the final episode of this two part series.

Snuck out just off the coast of Shoreham last night, fishing in about 12ft of water over an inshore reef.

Brighton and Worthing were getting slammed with rain but somehow we got lucky, we managed to stay just out the way of it.

Tried live prawns on light gear and it was instant action. You never know what’ll turn up when the sea’s stirred up like that. The light was fading, the darkness was approaching and that’s when the first bite happened.

One of those rare sessions where timing and a bit of local knowledge paid off big time. As a bonus I found an amazing little pinnacle where tons of fish were holding up and it’s so close to the port it’s ridiculous!

Change Your Lure Seriously ❗️⚠️

It never stops amazing me how often switching lures will interest a fish, even when the conditions seem perfect and you’re doing everything right

Had it happen again recently, same spot, same retrieve same cast angle nothing. One quick lure swap later and bang in comes a proper bass. It’s like they were always there just not up for what I was offering!

Whether it’s the colour action size or just a different profile in the water sometimes it only takes one change to turn things around

In this short video I sack off everything including work because I get a tip off from someone that there’s bass offshore at a certain mark. This is my opportunity to catch the first bass of the season.

I tried numerous attempts at this but the bass were being very finicky at this time of year and this was my chance to do it. I headed straight for the next lock and punched straight out to the mark and in this video I show you exactly what went on.

This video shows you that using big soft plastics in deep water really grabs the attention of the large bass.
