Court orders retrieval of govt vehicles taken away by former Zamfara governor

In June, the Zamfara State Police Command raided the former governor’s residences and seized some official vehicles as ordered by the court.

A Federal High Court in Sokoto has dismissed a suit filed by former Governor of Zamfara State, Bello Matawalle over ownership of more than official vehicles said to belong to the Zamfara State Government.

The vehicles were allegedly taken away by the former governor and his supporters before the handing over of power on Monday, May 29, 2023.

It would be recalled that in June, the Zamfara State Police Command raided the former governor’s residences and seized some official vehicles as ordered by the court.

Matawalle resisted the action and filed an objection at the Federal High Court, but according to Bala Idris, spokesperson of the Zamfara State Governor, the Sokoto division of the Federal High Court rejected Matawalle’s claims over the ownership of the official vehicles.

In a statement on Monday, December 4, 2023, Idris said the former governor and his cabinet members took away all official vehicles belonging to the state government and left the present administration with nothing to use.

The statement read in parts, “Recall that in June, the Zamfara State Government gave the former governor and his deputy five working days to return all official vehicles taken away.

“All demands for the return of the said vehicles proved abortive, and as a result, the Zamfara State Government resorted to obtaining a court order to retrieve them. In pursuit of that order, a total number of over 50 vehicles were recovered by the police.

“After the vehicles were recovered, Bello Matawalle quickly went to the Federal High Court in Gusau. The court granted an order for the cars to be returned to him. Additionally, he filed a separate suit at the same court, seeking to enforce his fundamental right to own property, including the vehicles in question.

“The Zamfara State Government requested the transfer of the case to another jurisdiction of the Federal High Court.

“The Federal High Court of Nigeria, Sokoto Judicial Division, dismissed the matter on Friday. The court refused the reliefs sought by Bello Matawalle and rejected his claim to the ownership of the official vehicles. As a result, the vehicles are still considered the property of the Zamfara State Government.”

Idris said the Government of Zamfara State is committed to recovering all that rightfully belongs to the people through an all-encompassing rescue mission without leaving any stone unturned.

He added that the judgment by the Federal High Court would encourage the state government to ensure “justice prevails and all perpetrators of financial banditry in Zamfara are brought to book.”

Outrage as warplane kills 85 in Kaduna village bombing

There was widespread outrage on Monday over the accidental bombing of Tudun Biri in the Igabi Local Government Area of Kaduna State by the Nigerian Army on Sunday, which left no fewer than 85 villagers dead.

Residents of the affected communities said they were celebrating Maulud, an Islamic event when the bombs were dropped by the military, a development that triggered both local and international condemnation.

The Deputy Governor of Kaduna State, Hadiza Balarabe, had to visit Islamic clerics in the state to douse tension, as the Governor of the state, Senator Uba Sani, ordered a thorough investigation into the bombing to forestall future occurrences.

As the state government moved to douse tension, the Christian Association of Nigeria, Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Human Rights Watch, and Amnesty International, among others, condemned the recurrent erroneous bombings by the military.

This came as findings showed that no fewer than 425 persons including children and women had been killed by military accidental bombings between September 2017 and 2023.

Cash shortage hits banks, customers rush for BVN/NIN revalidation

Huge crowd besieged banking halls on Monday, as customers moved to link their Bank Verification Numbers and National Identity Numbers to their bank accounts.

This followed the new directive of the banking regulator to the banks on Friday, to bar customers who were yet to link their BVN and NIN from having access to their accounts.

CBN said in its new directive that existing customers must, “Ensure all operated accounts/wallets created through agents, are fully profiled in the NIBSS ICAD and tagged with valid and correct BVN and/or NIN.”

It added that, “Effective immediately, any unfunded account/wallet shall be placed on ‘Post no debit or credit’ until the new process is satisfied.

“Effective March 1, 2024, all funded accounts or wallets shall be placed on ‘Post no debit or credit’ and no further transactions permitted.”

Post no debit is a term used to describe a restriction imposed by banks on specific accounts, preventing customers from making withdrawals, transfers, or debits from their accounts.

While observing customers’ response to the new directive, The PUNCH saw large customers at the Ojodu/Berger branches of Zenith Bank, Guaranty Trust Bank and First Bank, who came to link their NIN to their bank accounts. The queues at GTBank remained long as of the time our correspondent left the bank.

An official of First Bank, Akure, Ondo State, who pleaded anonymity, said there was more crowd in the bank than usual.

“There are more people in the bank today to do one thing or the other, most especially the connection of their Bank Verification Number,” he said.

A senior official of a Tier-1 bank in Lagos in an interview with PUNCH said, “The truth is that many banks will find it difficult to cope with the anticipated rush as we have lost several key employees to the Japa syndrome. Besides, the banks had embarked on staff rationalisation to keep the operating expenses low.”

A branch manager of a new generation bank, also in an interview with PUNCH, said if the rush of customers without BVN and NIN was much, the lender would have no choice but to extend the working hours for its employees, and might consider working on Saturdays and Sundays to clear the backlog.

Latest Data obtained from the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System showed that over 75 million bank accounts could be restricted or outrightly blocked as only 59 million BVN was registered as of October 9, 2023.

Cash crunch

Also, despite the CBN’s directives to the banks to continue to issue, accept old and redesigned naira banknotes, scarcity of the local currencies has persisted.

”President Tinubu made a mistake appointing Wike as FCT minister” – APC chieftain

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State, Chief Eze Chukwuemeka Eze, has faulted President Bola Tinubu for appointing Nyesom Wike as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

In a statement, Eze faulted the demolition of structures in the FCT by the Wike-led administration at a time when the economy is in bad shape and people were struggling to get by.

The APC chieftain noted that rather than develop an economic programme to improve the living standards of FCT residents, the former Rivers State Governor embarked on an autocratic move.

He said: “A preference for democratic endeavour over authoritarian caprice is a fundamental attribute of any responsible society or government that wishes to impact its populace through policies and programmes.”

“Demolition spree targeted at innocent citizens in the FCT at a moment when the value of the naira has remained on a free fall, and the economy, on a steady downward trend with resultant hardship on the citizenry smacks of sheer authoritarianism laced with deliberate wickedness for the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike to deploy the powers of his office to oppress the defenceless and perceived political adversaries in the guise of reformation.”

He blamed the situation on President Tinubu for allegedly feigning ignorance of the past actions of the former Rivers State Governor and appointed him as minister “despite public oppositions for fear of dishonesty, non-performance, and abuse of office.”

Eze noted that character is critical in selecting persons to hold public offices in civilized climes, unlike Nigeria, noting that “this reality remains one of our major albatrosses.”

JUST IN: PDP Suspends Imo State Chairman over ‘Gross Misconduct’

The Imo state chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Charles Ugwu, has been suspended over alleged gross misconduct and insubordination.

The suspension, which took effect immediately, was announced in a statement by Njaba Duruiheoma, the party’s state secretary.

The motion for Ugwu’s suspension was moved by Emeka Alihe, the PDP chairman of Ohaji Egbema LGA, and seconded by Godspower Apollos, chairman of the party in Owerri municipal. The motion was also adopted by chairmen of at least 18 other LGAs and members of the State Executive Committee (SEC) as far back as October 24.

Alihe, who moved the motion in October, also accused the suspended party chairman of failing to summon a meeting of the state working committee, contrary to the provisions of section 21 (3) of the party’s constitution.

“No justifiable reason for failing to attend any of the thank-you tours embarked upon by the governorship candidate of the party, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, to the 27 L.G.As of Imo state including that of Owerri Municipal council that was done at the state secretariat of this party, contrary to S. 58(i) (e) of the party constitution, notwithstanding that he was duly notified of the tour,” Alihe was quoted to have said.

Chidi D**e, the PDP chairman of Okigwe LGA, has been appointed as interim chairman of the party in Imo state.

2027 Presidency: APC group begins massive grassroots mobilization for Tinubu

The Consolidated All Progressives Congress Grassroot Movement says it has commenced massive grassroots mobilization for President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group noted that there was an urgent need to consolidate power and secure a successful future for the APC.

National chairman of the group, Engr. Salisu Magaji, stated this at the inauguration of its national, zonal, and state executive members in Abuja on Monday.

Navajo also commended President Tinubu’s political feats since he assumed office.

The group, which consists of loyalists and supporters of Tinubu, also recognised his “immense contributions” to the APC’s success over the years.

Magaji stated that Tinubu had demonstrated exemplary leadership skills, which have earned him the admiration and respect of many across the country.

“The expectation is very clear. We are mobilizers to the grassroots and we have mobilised for the party (APC) and we have started mobilising against the 2027 election,” Magaji said.

“We are not going to relent in our mandate and we will bring the first president that will emerge in this country. We have demonstrated that within the six months of his stay, you can see that the atmosphere is very conducive.

“Before, I couldn’t travel from here to my state but now I travel by road for about 12 kilometers. Security is becoming a history in the country and you can now see that a lot of investments are coming up. He is the first president to ever travel to Saudi Arabia where they promised to invest in our oil sector and also our banking industry while the dollar will be regulated and we will have imports and exports as expected.

“Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is the first President that doesn’t have a boss, he doesn’t have a political mentor and so we are copying his own style because we have grown up from a child of kindergarten to secondary school, to university and we are now emeritus, retired professors in terms of support group so we are more than support groups now, we are calling voters.

“We decide who’s going to be the 2027 president. Whatever you do, we will wait for you at the bus stop, if you make us happy, we are going to campaign door to door, office to office to ensure that 2027 will be better than what we are having now.

“We are giving 100 percent hope because Asiwaju has promised that he will remove subsidy and he has kept to his words and you can see what is happening, there are a lot of investors and attraction outside of the country and today the oil issue is going to become history, the dollar issue is going to become issue.

“We are talking about health; if you look at his budget, what takes a major part of the budget is security, human development, and education and that is to show that this guy has a sense of belonging and this is our major problem in the country. He didn’t talk about infrastructure. He talks about human development, security, and education.”

On his part, the national secretary, Hon. Butches Emmanuel Nwosu, appreciated everyone present, emphasizing the movement’s distinction as more than a support group within the APC.

He stressed the importance of understanding the group’s objectives, underscoring its role as the prime platform for grassroots mobilization within the party.

Nwosu highlighted the movement’s commitment to upcoming local government, ward, and polling unit elections.

“Tinubu’s govt treating Emefiele like a common criminal” – Nigerian intellectuals threaten protest

A diaspora group, Conference of Nigerian Intellectuals in the United States, has alleged human rights violations in the ongoing trial of the former Central Bank of Nigeria governor, Godwin Emefiele.

Politics Nigeria reports that Emefiele was suspended by President Bola Tinubu and arrested over alleged corruption charges during his tenure as governor of the apex bank.

In a statement on Monday by its president, Philips Idris, the group frowned at the handling of the case against former CBN governor by the Economics and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Idris claimed there has been serial abuse of the rule of law and disregard for the freedom and rights of innocent Nigerians since the new administration came on board, citing Emefiele as a case study.

“We have watched with concern and indeed, consternation, the relentless persecution of Mr Godwin Emefiele. Emefiele is currently being sequestered and shackled like a common criminal in Nigeria,” the statement read.

“Several court orders had been secured for his release but they were serially and flagrantly disobeyed by the EFCC and the DSS. Judging by the ferocity with which Emefiele is being pursued, it seems someone wants him dead.

“His traducers are willing to break any law of the land and are dehumanized to punish him for carrying out his statutory duties during his time as governor of CBN.

“He has been denied his freedom and basic rights against both the domestic and international human rights laws. Article 9 of the United Nations Human Rights states that ‘No one shall be subjected to arbitrary arrest, detention or exile.

“As concerned citizens in the diaspora, we have decided to draw the attention of the international community to the new reign of terror back home. Our dear country seems to be heading back to dictatorship.

“We are by this statement urging the Nigerian government to do the right thing which is to free Emefiele. We are also warning the EFCC not to erode the confidence of the international community in doing business with us as a nation by violating the fundamental rights of perceived opponents of the Asiwaju Administration.

“Should this plea fall on deaf ears, we will be staging a peaceful protest in the USA and another by our sister organization in London on Monday (next week)” the group noted.

13-year-old girl abducted by unknown gang while returning from school in Lagos

A 13-year-old student, Miracle Adereti, has been abducted by an unknown gang while returning home from school last Friday, December 1 2023 in the Ikotun area of Lagos state.

Her father, Mr. Adereti Oluwadare Segun, said he dropped Miracle and her younger sister at the bus stop where the school bus usually picks them in the morning before heading to work at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), where he serves as an air traffic communicator with the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

He received a distressing call in the afternoon informing him of his daughter’s abduction.

Witnesses reported that the gang followed the school bus, parked a short distance away from the bus stop, waited for the bus to leave, then abducted Miracle while she and her sister were walking home.

Mr Adereti, while speaking to journalists, said: “We woke up early to prepare the kids for school before I dropped them at the bus stop. We had no idea of such a wicked act by this gang, who falsely claimed that, as a politician, I have sufficient funds to secure my daughter’s release.

He added: “We’ve received threats warning us not to involve the police. But as a family, we are deeply distressed and have no choice but to seek help from law enforcement. I implore the diligent officers of the Nigeria Police Force to swiftly take action to track down these culprits. Their threats indicate they’re seeking for ransom putting our lives in peril.”

The distraught father also appealed to the police to help secure his residence in the meantime due to the threats.

“The situation has traumatised my family. I earnestly appeal for immediate intervention to bring these criminals to justice and ensure our safety,” he added
The incident was reported at the Afonka Police Station in Egbeda, Alimosho, Lagos, on the same day.

Super Eagles: Peseiro safe until after AFCON – Sports Minister

Minister of Sports Development, John Enoh has confirmed that the future of Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro will be determined after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Based on the pronouncement of the Sports Minister, Peseiro will be in the Nigeria dugout during the upcoming tournament in Ivory Coast amid calls in some quarters for the Portuguese football tactician to be dismissed following a poor start to the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.

Enoh has admitted that the Ministry of Sports Development have a say in the status of Peseiro as coach of the Super Eagles as they are involved in the payment of his salaries and agreed on a new contract with him earlier this year.

The former Venezuela and Saudi Arabia manager accepted a pay cut to remain as coach of the Super Eagles, the Minister has confirmed.

S p e a k i n g t o C h a n n e l s Television Sports, John Enoh stated: “I’ll tell you what I met and what I have also done so far. I was given a brief when I became Minister of Sports Development about the fact that the employment of the present Super Eagles coach, the signing of the contract that took place in my predecessor’s office as Minister of Youth and Sports.

“That means that the Ministry played a role in that employment. I also met a situation in which the president of the NFF and his team including the Secretary-General had come to see me and talked about the fact that my predecessor had assured that the payment of the Super Eagles coach was going to be the responsibility of Government, and after about 12 months into the contract of the present coach that there were outstanding salaries that had not been paid.”

Benue govt officials plotting protest against President Tinubu, Akume, Akpabio, APC alleges

The All Progressives Congress, APC, in Benue State says it has uncovered a plot by unnamed officials of the Benue State Government to stage protests against President Bola Tinubu, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Senator George Akume, and Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The party claimed that the protest is aimed at stopping the President from assenting the recent resolution of the Senate stopping the release of funds to Local Government Caretaker Committees in any state of the Federation.

The party in a statement made available to newsmen Monday in Makurdi by its State Publicity Secretary, Daniel Ihomun, said the plot in the APC-controlled state had been “deeply hatched and their first experimental step was the call on the Party Chairman in the State, Comrade Austin Agada to resign without advancing any genuine reason.

“The party views this act of sabotage as portending grave danger to the unity of the state and the party, if people who claim APC membership and are working under an APC state government would undermine their President, the Senate President and the SGF in an open protest in their quest to stifle the hands of government on a matter of law.

“Much as the organizers are free to express themselves, taking steps that would embarrass Mr. President and his administration is unacceptable and must be halted.

“The party therefore calls on the Inspector General of Police and the Benue State Commissioner of Police to monitor closely this planned protest which may wear a semblance of solidarity march but with a sinister end motive.

“The party equally calls on the Governor of Benue State, Hyacinth Alia to monitor the activities of unscrupulous elements around his government who are using his name to perpetrate acts that are capable of plunging the state into anarchy that would necessitate the declaration of a state of emergency.

“All security agencies in the state are enjoined to be on alert to check the activities of this group that seems to undermine the peace of the state and is hellbent on planting divisive tendencies. The general public should please, take note of this Nollywood script.”

Contacted, the Benue State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Matthew Abo said “I am not aware of that.”

Recall that few days back the 23 Local Government Chairmen of the APC had accused Governor Hyacinth Alia of allegedly alienating the party and stakeholders and running the affairs of the state without carrying anyone along.

Also, the Senior Special Assistant to the State Governor on Youth Mobilization and Empowerment, Moses Mkeenem, shortly after, called on the State Chairman of the party, Austin Agada to resign his position for incompetence and allegedly instigating the revolt against the governor.
