I CAN BELIEVE IT

Tennis players have close to no originality when it comes to self-talk. The phrases players yell out upon missing a ball are the same the world over. The most common outcry, by far, in any language is " I can't believe it."

Sure enough a player misses the same shot over and over for years and years and repeatedly yells out "I can't believe it."

I was fortunate to have had the chance to watch Neale Frasier play on the former Grand Masters tour in the late 70's. Neal, 81 now, was the 1960 Wimbledon Champion. The Hall of Famer from Melbourne, Australia was once ranked number one in the world. He won a total of 19 Grand Slams, which included a career Grand Slam in doubles. Neale has the record for the longest career as a Davis Cup captain. (24 years)

Every time I hear a player join the same club of tennis self-talk (THE I CAN'T BELIEVE IT CLUB) I think of Neal Frasier. While I watched Neale, he missed a routine forehand in the net. After the error the crowd was quiet. Mr. Frazier looked up into the heavens. He paused. He did not scream. But with self-control he said loud enough for the everyone in the small stadium to hear, " I can believe it."

"I can believe it" versus "I can't believe it" is a tennis lesson unto itself. When I hear a player yell "I can't believe it" in one of my practices I yell for everyone to stop. All the players on the surrounding courts are informed to yell out as loud as possible just the opposite. "I can believe it" is heard loud and clear. It helps humble the player that just shouted with emotional stupidity. Reality rules. The community message is strong. You missed dummy. Now deal with it properly. Perspective 101.

When a forehand goes in the net it is not a mystery at all. It is not abstract. It is clear. Honesty is the best policy. Accept the error. There is no perfection. There is no denial. Do not look away from the error. Look right at it. Problem solve. Process through through a simple correction in your mind and then visualize executing the correction. See the image of yourself making the routine shot. You manage the mistake. The mistake does not manage you.

Thank you Neale Fraser. An "I believe it" mentality is best.

A SIMPLE FORMULA

Paul J. Meyer is a world leader and expert in the field of motivation and human development. His four steps to success is a simple formula to follow. They are: 1) Idea 2) Thought 3) Action 4) Result. My experience has been that his four keywords help juniors understand the process of working towards success.

1) Idea.....become a tennis player.
2) Thought.....seek information, ideas and insights.
3) Action..... practice before practice and practice after practice.
4) Result.....have fun through higher and higher levels of competition.

Arthur Ashe quote, "It takes three years to be a fair player, five years to be a good player and ten years to be a great player."

Simplicity, Strokes, Strategy, Stats, Success

Watch Andre and Pete play a few points. Big targets, deep, high net clearance, down the middle, breathing out, the position of the racquet head on volleys, the follow-through on forehands, following the direction of the ball, closing in on the net and a few others are mentioned as basic tennis tips for having a solid game. The better player generally has simpler technique and tactics. Check out the short attached video clip.
