Keir Johnson, 34 years old at the time, and her eight-month-old daughter Chloe were last seen on Sunday, April 30, 2017, in Hampton, Virginia. Shortly thereafter, on May 14, 2017, Ms. Johnson's vehicle was discovered abandoned in Newport News. Since that time, the Newport News Police Department (NNPD) has taken the lead on this investigation, focusing significant resources on finding Keir and Chloe.
“We understand the deep emotional impact this situation has had on the family, our community, and our Department and it has always been our sincerest hope that Keir and Chloe would be found alive. However, as the investigation progressed, we had to confront the painful reality that this was not the case,” said Steve Drew, Chief of Police.
Over the years, NNPD has worked tirelessly alongside local, state, and federal partners, dedicating tens of thousands of hours to uncovering the truth behind the disappearance of Keir and Chloe.
On Friday, February 14, 2025, the investigation led to the arrest of Mr. Carlos A Johnson, Jr., a 46-year-old Newport News man. He was taken into custody in Newport News at approximately 12:30 p.m. and charged with two counts of First Degree Murder.
As part of the ongoing efforts, the Newport News Police Foundation is offering a reward of $25,000 and Smithfield Foods is offering an additional reward of $10,000 for information that leads to the recovery of Keir and Chloe. We urge community members to come forward with any information, no matter how small it may seem, as it could be crucial in bringing justice and closure to the family.
“We have consistently asked the Johnson family for their patience throughout this process, and we understand the emotional toll this has taken on them. I want to assure them and the community that our investigators, including the members of our Cold Case Team, have never wavered in their commitment to solving this case and I am very proud of the work they have done. The outcome will now be determined in a court of law.”
This day has been a long time coming, especially for the family of Keir and Chloe. We want to express our deepest empathy for the Johnson family during this incredibly difficult time. While we recognize that this arrest cannot bring Keir and Chloe back, we sincerely hope it provides a sense of justice for their loved ones,” added Chief Drew.
