FTHS Holds Media and Information Literacy Seminar with Undersecretary Claire Castro

Florentino Torres High School successfully held a Media and Information Literacy with the distinguished and honorable presence of Undersecretary Claire Castro from the Presidential Communications Office as the guest speaker. The event, which aimed to promote responsible media use and with a strong focus on avoiding and combating fake news. This event was held yesterday, October 7, 2025, at the FTHS Social Hall.

The program began with a prayer led by Allen James B. Calderon, followed by the flag ceremony headed by Shaunnelle Leanrey r. Camaquin. School principal Ms. Maria Eva S. Nacion delivered the opening remarks. The Niners Dance Troupe then energized the crowd with an intermission performance before the much-awaited talk of Usec. Castro.

In her inspiring talk for the maging mapanuri discussion titled โ€œNasyonalismo sa Puso ng Kabataang Pilipino,โ€ Usec. Castro emphasized the importance of national pride and responsibility in the digital age. โ€œ'๐˜‹๐˜ช ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ช๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ฌ๐˜ข๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฎ๐˜ถ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜ฏ ๐˜ฏ๐˜ข ๐˜—๐˜ช๐˜ญ๐˜ช๐˜ฑ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜ฐ ๐˜ต๐˜ข๐˜บ๐˜ฐ,โ€ she reminded the audience, calling on students to be vigilant and truthful, especially in the face of misinformation spreading online. To illustrate her point, she played the song โ€œPilipinas Kong Mahalโ€ and presented a video tackling the issues of fake news regarding the West Philippine Sea incident that occurred on March 21, 2025. She discussed how false reports can distort public perception and undermine national unity.

Undersecretary Castro also challenged the students with thought-provoking questions, asking them what kind of Filipinos they aspire to be, if they can defend the countryโ€™s rights, and whether they would stand for truth rather than participate in spreading lies. Her message resonated strongly with the audience, inspiring reflection on how every Filipino can contribute to the nationโ€™s progress by being responsible media consumers.

The event continued with an engaging open forum, where students eagerly asked questions and shared their insights. A heartfelt song performance by Althea from the FTHS Senior High followed, adding a touch of artistry and emotion to the program.

The seminar concluded with the presentation of a certificate to Usec. Claire Castro and a photo opportunity with students and faculty members.

The USAP TAYO: BAYAN MUNA session left a lasting impression on all attendees, reminding everyone of their duty to seek truth, promote patriotism, and use media as a tool for unity and nation-building.

Florentino Torres High School celebrated their World Teachers' Day 2025 with the theme, "Your Passion for Teaching Lights the Way for Future Generations," held at the FTHS School Grounds last Friday, October 3, 2025. The entire celebration was spearheaded by the Supreme Secondary Learner Government (SSLG), whose officers and members worked tirelessly in planning, organizing, and managing the program to ensure that every performance ran smoothly. With the support of the SPTA and the school administration, the SSLG successfully brought to life a heartfelt event that honored the hard work and dedication of all Torresian educators.

Before the celebration began, a mass was conducted at around 8:00 in the morning. After the mass, teachers returned to their respective department rooms. While this was happening, some students prepared special performances for fellow Torresians.

Due to inclement weather, the parade of subject teachers per grade level did not take place. The Entrance of Colors, led by Crew Leader Karl Robert Palabasan along with the FTHS Boy Scouts, gave honor and salute, which was then followed by the singing of the National Anthem, led by SSLG Protocol Officer Genevieve L. Tumazar, to officially open the celebration. SSLG President Lance Derick S. Manalo then delivered a heartfelt message saying,

Grade 10 students opened the grade-level presentations with a song interpretation. The Grade 9 and 8 students hyped up the oval with an energetic dance performance, while Grade 7 and senior high school students delivered spectacular song numbers, turning the school grounds into a concert-like atmosphere.

The SPTA and selected teachers also showcased their talents through Zumba, dance numbers, and singing performances to celebrate their special day.

After the stunning performances of selected teachers and SPTA officers, the winners of the โ€œSinging in Tandemโ€ competition and the winners from the Club Fair that was held last month were awarded.

Before officially ending the program, the SSLG had prepared a surprise raffle for the teachers. The said raffle was spearheaded by Mrs. Marichu J. Hernandez, the Grade 8 Curriculum Chairperson and the Head Teacher IV of the English Department, along with Mr. Rogelio A. Yag-at, the Grade 10 Curriculum Chairperson and the Head Teacher IV of the Science Department, and with the other SSLG officers that facilitated the raffle.

The program was officially concluded by Mr. Yag-at by giving his brief closing remarks on the event.

To our beloved teachers, thank you for every sacrifice, every lesson, and every word of encouragement. We promise to carry your wisdom with us as we work toward a brighter and better tomorrow.โค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅโœจ

The event, held at the school's Mini-theater, was spearheaded by English Department Head, Mrs. Marichu J. Hernandez. Its primary goal was to ensure that both students and their guardians have a clear understanding of the program's objectives and mechanics.

ARAL-Reading, which stands for Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning, is a vital initiative aimed at strengthening students' reading and comprehension skills.

To accommodate all participants, the orientation was split into two sessions. The morning session at 11:00 AM was attended by students from Grade 8 and Grade 10. ๐’๐๐Ž๐‘๐“๐’ | FTHS secures Championship Ticket against LDHS Girls' Volleyball Team

Florentino Torres High School Girls' Volleyball Team is one step away from "Palarong Maynila 2025" as they swept down the Lakandula High School Volleyball Team with 25-07, 25-20 inside the jampacked home turf of LDHS.

Girls in maroon, FTHS, reigned the first set with 8-2. Due to back-to-back errors from FTHS, lowered the score to 12.

LDHS refreshed themselves as they led the early part of the second set, 4-1, but a 4-0 run by FTHS happened with the team captain, Celesthine Tahud, on the service line.

Girls in red, LDHS, dominated again with a 5-2 run, 9-7, making the FTHS Girls' to call a timeout. Torres reclaimed the game with a service ace from Rhiona Ocampo, which serves as the start of a 10-2 run, 19-12.

LDHS tried to fight back, but FTHS denied the aspiring comeback of the home team, ending the match with a 4-point lead, 25-21.

"Masaya kami na napatunayan namin na kaya pa rin pala namin, sobrang proud ako sa mga teammates ko at kay coach kasi binigay nila yung best nila" Team captain and the team's Middle Blocker, Celesthine Tahud said.

"Siyempre masaya ako kasi lumabas lahat ng pina-practice namin, binigyan nila kami ng magandang game, kita kita nalang ulit sa Championship" Open Spiker, Anggelline Roque said.

Both teams will meet again for the final game and to secure the slot for Palarong Maynila 2025, as LDHS was able to take down MLQHS last Wednesday night in the battle for the last Championship seat.

Around 40,000+ Filipinos gathered in Luneta Park in Manila, and in EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City for the Anti-Corruption Walk and Trillion Peso March, earlier today, September 21, 2025.

These protests were organized by anti-corruption groups and by the Church Leaders Council for National Transformation which are students, activists and Catholic Protestant leaders.

It started around 6AM where some people are carrying placards and banners condemning alleged ghost flood-control projects worth hundreds of billions of pesos, said to involve politicians and DPWH officials.

Some artists such as โ€œItโ€™s Showtimeโ€ hosts, Vice Ganda and Anne Curtis joined thousands of Filipinos in the streets as they marched with the Angat Bayanihan Volunteer Network for the in Quezon City.

The two were joined by Ion Perez, Jackie Gonzaga, Jasmine Curtis, Donny Pangilinan, and Darren Espanto, marching all the way to the People Power Monument, coinciding with the 53rd anniversary of the declaration of martial law.

Their steps echo a nationโ€™s demand for justice, proving that the spirit of unity and courage, served as both a remembrance of past struggles and a renewed push for accountability in the present.
