l Neelam Singh, a native of Agra, always dreamed of starting her own business during her MBA days. Inspired by the lack of affordable, youth-friendly restaurants in her hometown, she decided to enter the Quick Service Restaurant (QSR) industry.
She interned at a restaurant during her MBA, which gave her valuable experience. After working in the corporate world for nearly three years, she launched The Burger Company (TBC) in 2018. Her first outlet was a small 250 sq ft shop in Palam Vihar, Gurugram. Today, TBC is a successful burger chain with 100 outlets across India and over ₹40 crore in revenue.
Neelam studied BBA from Dayalbagh Educational Institute in Agra and completed her MBA in Marketing from ICFAI Hyderabad. A turning point came during a college fest when she ran a food stall that made ₹1 lakh profit in just 3 days-this gave her the confidence that food had strong business potential. After marrying Nitesh Dhankhar in 2014, Neelam began saving aggressively to fund her dream. While working at ICICI Lombard, she cut all extra expenses-skipped office lunches, ate roadside meals, and endured emotional lows. Yet, within 8 months, she saved ₹5 lakh
on her own, despite having no support from
her in-laws.In 2016, she quit her job and spent 10 months planning and setting up her first outlet. She handled everything herself-from finding the location to cleaning the kitchen. Her pet dog Bruno even became a mascot for the outlet, which customers affectionately called the "puppy café."
Even during the COVID-19 lockdown, Neelam didn't give up. She used the time to plan TBC's expansion. In October 2020, she sold her first franchise in Delhi. Today, TBC is run mostly through franchises, with just one company-owned outlet.
Neelam now leads 9 Plates Hospitality Pvt Ltd, the parent company of TBC. In 2021, her husband joined the business, helping with marketing, development, and finance. Her story is a perfect example of how grit, smart planning, and belief in oneself can turn even the smallest start into a huge success.
