Did anyone else do a double take listening to Winston Peters' latest speech? Because if you’ve been paying even half attention to Brian Tamaki’s messaging over the past couple of years, then Winston’s one-liners today felt like déjà vu — word for word.
Let’s not beat around the bush: it looked like NZ First ran out of ideas and went trolling through Brian Tamaki’s page for inspiration. “War on Woke”? That’s not new. Brian’s been ringing that bell for a while now, long before it became politically trendy. He’s plastered it online, shouted it from stages, and rallied everyday Kiwis around it. But suddenly, Winston’s reading it off a teleprompter like it’s his own epiphany — and both 1News and 3News swallowed it whole, serving it up as some fresh new battle cry.
Sorry, but no. Winston doesn’t believe in this stuff. He’s just saying what his campaign team tells him will win back a few disillusioned conservatives. And speaking of that campaign team... who’s on it? Anyone we know? Because if they’re lifting lines from Tamaki’s playbook, they should at least have the decency to admit it.
Let’s not forget: NZ First gave us the very RSE (Relationships and Sexuality Education) curriculum they now pretend to oppose. It was their own Tracey Martin who helped roll it into schools. But now, Winston’s on stage acting like he’s leading the charge against it? Give me a break. He’s not leading — he’s following the polls. He’s saying whatever will keep him relevant just a little longer.
Brian, love him or loathe him, is different. He doesn't need to check the political weather before stepping into the storm. He’s been standing out front in the rain, bullhorn in hand, copping the flak, long before it was safe or popular to do so. That’s called conviction. That’s called spine.
Winston? He’ll bail on this whole “anti-woke” show the second he stops polling well. We’ve seen it before. And let's be honest, at his age, the old dog has had one too many dogfights — and it’s starting to show!
Then there was the forced nod to Christianity from Winston, quoting “This is God’s own country, but the devil’s mess,” and ending with the cringey finale of “GOD BLESS YOU ALL, AND GOD BLESS NEW ZEALAND.” A clear attempt at Trump-style bravado, but it fell flat. Why? Because it lacked sincerity. It reeked of strategy, not spirituality.
So here’s a little reminder to the media and to Kiwi voters: if you want to know where these lines really came from, go check Brian Tamaki’s timeline. The man’s not just quoting scripts — he’s been living the mission. Like it or not, Brian is the one who’s been in the trenches, saying the same thing year after year, through every storm and smear.
Winston may steal Brian's lines, but he'll never carry his spine!
