A 22-year-old woman of Munyama village in chief Hamaundu’s area in Pemba district has been unlawfully wounded by her grandfather after she allegedly denied him s*x.

An axe is alleged to have been used in the act of inflicting the injuries on the woman.

Southern Province Police Commissioner, Alfred Nawa, has confirmed the incident to ZANIS in Pemba but did not reveal the name of the suspect.

Mr. Nawa said police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect who is on the run.

Facts of the matter are that on June 9, 2022 at around 15 hours in Munyama village, the victim was sent by her grandfather to serve him water for drinking in his bedroom where he was.

It is alleged that after receiving the cup of water, the suspect ordered the victim to get onto the bed so that he could have carnal knowledge with her.

Mr. Nawa explained that after she refused, the suspect got an axe and hit the victim on the left side of the forehead, causing a cut.

He said the victim reported the matter to the police and alleged that it was the second time her grandfather was making such s*xual advances on her.

The victim stays with the same grandfather and a sibling.

More than 80 cases of monkey-pox have been confirmed in at least 12 countries.

BBC reports that the World Health Organization -WHO- says another 50 suspected cases are being investigated - without naming any countries - and warned that more cases are likely to be reported.

Infections have been confirmed in nine European countries, as well as the US, Canada and Australia.

Monkey-pox is most common in remote parts of Central and West Africa.

It is a rare viral infection which is usually mild and from which most people recover in a few weeks.

This is according to the UKs National health Service.

The virus does not spread easily between people and the risk to the wider public is said to be very low.

There is no specific vaccine for monkey-pox, but a smallpox jab offers 85 percent protection since the two viruses are quite similar.

So far, public health agencies in Europe have confirmed cases in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Germany, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Sweden.

THE WHEEL OF JUSTICE WILL SURELY CATCH UP WITH THEM - HH

President Hakainde Hichilema writes;

Fellow citizens,

We understand the citizens' anger, frustration and their collective resolve to rid our society of the intolerable culture of corruption, especially among those that should be servants of the people.

Like drug trafficking, corruption is a scourge capable of destroying communities, increase inequality among our people, distort and exploit public investments and reduce public revenues.

The perpetrators of the vice may flaunt short lived victory, play the victim and mock the institutions of law and order. However the long arm of the law and the wheel of justice will surely catch up with them.

Corruption will be fought against, with everything that is legally at our disposal, vigorously, relentlessly and the lawbreakers will be brought to book.

Hakainde Hichilema,
President of the Republic of Zambia.
