To Kill a Dragon with subtitles.

To Kill a Dragon is a 1988 Soviet fantasy drama film directed by Mark Zakharov.
In a totalitarian city ruled by the fearsome Dragon — a tyrant who demands loyalty and crushes all dissent — people have long surrendered their will to resist. When the wandering knight Lancelot arrives, he vows to free them and slay the monster. Yet, he soon discovers that the Dragon’s true power lies not in his might, but in the fear and obedience rooted in every citizen’s heart. To defeat the Dragon, Lancelot must first awaken courage and freedom in those who have forgotten what they mean — only then can the final battle between man and his own fear truly begin.
The film is adapted from Evgeny Schwartz’s allegorical play Dragon, originally written during wartime; Zakharov transforms it into a parable about tyranny and complicity, embedding visual references to Soviet life (e.g. “Council meetings” as party sessions, children as pioneers).
Though released in 1988, To Kill a Dragon was a joint Soviet–West German production, made by Mosfilm along with Bavaria Film and ZDF, which was quite rare during the late Cold War.
It was Zakharov’s only major theatrical film for many years; he was primarily known for his stage direction and television work.
The film won two Nika Awards (a top Russian film prize): for Costume Design (Natalya Moneva) and Music (Gennady Gladkov).
Alexandra Zakharova (playing Elsa) is Mark Zakharov’s daughter, merging personal and creative lines in this production.

The Golden Calf with subtitles.

The Golden Calf is a 1968 Soviet comedy directed by Mikhail Shveitser.
Ostap Bender, the cunning and witty swindler, returns with a new grand plan—to track down and strip an underground millionaire, Alexander Koreiko, of his hidden fortune. Along the way, he gathers a band of unlikely companions: the naive driver Shura Balaganov, the gloomy petty thief Panikovsky, and the earnest young enthusiast Kozlevich with his battered car. Together, this odd quartet sets out on a comic journey across the Soviet Union, chasing wealth, clashing with bureaucracy, and constantly stumbling into absurd misadventures. But Bender’s dream of becoming a millionaire himself proves as elusive as ever.
The story is based on the satirical novel by Ilf and Petrov, whose works were considered daring for their criticism of greed, corruption, and blind ambition.
Actor Sergey Yursky became widely recognized for his brilliant portrayal of Ostap Bender. His performance gave the conman a mix of charm, irony, and flamboyance, which helped cement Bender as one of Soviet cinema’s most iconic characters.
The film was shot during the 1960s, a period when satire had to walk a fine line with Soviet censorship. Despite this, the adaptation managed to retain much of the novel’s biting humor and social commentary.
Today, The Golden Calf is considered a cult classic in Russia and the former Soviet Union, often quoted in everyday speech thanks to Bender’s witty one-liners and sharp observations.

I Am Dragon with subtitles.

I Am Dragon is a 2015 Russian fantasy romance film directed by Indar Dzhendubaev.
A dragon steals a bride on her wedding day, carrying her to a lonely island where nothing is as it seems. As she falls for a mysterious stranger bound to the beast, Mira learns that loving a dragon may cost her more than her freedom—it may consume her heart.
The story is loosely inspired by Russian folklore and epic poems, particularly ancient legends of maidens being sacrificed to dragons, but it twists the tale into a gothic romance.
The soundtrack mixes traditional Slavic motifs with modern cinematic scoring, giving the film a unique, haunting soundscape that emphasizes its dark romantic tone.
The dragon was created entirely with CGI, and the film was praised for its unexpectedly high-quality visual effects, considered groundbreaking for Russian fantasy cinema at the time.
Despite being a Russian production, the movie was shot in Bulgaria and Russia, taking advantage of dramatic landscapes that amplified the fairy-tale atmosphere.
The film was produced by Timur Bekmambetov, known internationally for Wanted and Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter. He brought his signature mix of fantasy and visual spectacle into Russian cinema with this project.

Old Men: Robbers with subtitles.

Old Men: Robbers is a 1972 Soviet comedy-drama by Eldar Ryazanov.
Two elderly museum employees, unwilling to settle into retirement, hatch a wild plan to stage a robbery themselves and then “heroically” solve it to prove they’re still valuable. But when a real criminal snatches the stolen money first, their harmless scheme turns into a genuine investigation, dragging the old men into a cascade of comic twists where their loyalty, wit, and stubbornness are put to the ultimate test.
The story reflects the social tension of the time: older workers being forced into retirement despite their experience, which struck a chord with Soviet audiences who feared becoming “useless” in their later years.
Yury Nikulin, a legendary clown and comic actor, played the lead role, bringing his trademark mix of humor and melancholy — a balance that made the character both funny and deeply sympathetic.
Andrei Mironov, another Soviet screen icon, was originally considered for a role, but Ryazanov decided the chemistry between Nikulin and veteran actor Evgeny Evstigneev would create a stronger duo.
Much of the film was shot on location in Moscow, with real museum interiors used to add authenticity to the “heist” setting.

The Cold Summer of 1953 with subtitles.

The Cold Summer of 1953 is a 1988 Soviet film directed by Aleksandr Proshkin.
In the turbulent summer following Stalin’s death, a wave of released convicts spills out of the Gulag and terror descends upon a quiet northern village. When a gang of ruthless criminals seizes the settlement, the defenseless townspeople are forced to rely on two exiled political prisoners—men once condemned by the regime—who must now stand against the marauders to protect innocent lives and reclaim their own dignity.
The film is known for being the last role of beloved Soviet actor Anatoly Papanov. After his sudden passing, his part was dubbed by Igor Yefimov. As a poignant tribute, the film ends with a behind-the-scenes clip featuring Papanov’s real voice, uttering the words, “I only regret one thing… the years. I want so badly to live like a human… and to work.”
Originally, the lead character Luzga was an archaeologist, but Valeriy Priyomykhov argued that such a profession wouldn’t fit a man capable of fighting criminals. The role was rewritten to be a former military intelligence captain, lending true grit and realism.
The film was shot in the village of Ruga by Lake Syamozero in Karelia, with Proshkin living there during production, while the cast and crew stayed in nearby Petrozavodsk.
Received the Jury Prize at the All-Union Film Festival (1988) and the Grand Prix at the Valenciennes International Film Festival in France (1989).
