🦇 BATMAN TALK RETURNS! This month on Lighting the Bat-Signal, Always Hold On To Smallville host Zach Moore joins me to discuss the seminal BATMAN: YEAR ONE by Miller & Mazzucchelli, the infamous follow-up YEAR TWO by Barr, Davis, & McFarlane, AND the animated films they inspired (including fan favorite MASK OF THE PHANTASM).

It was a fascinating exercise to consider these works in relation to each other, reaffirm Year One’s iconic status, and examine how Mask of the Phantasm was able to spin Year Two’s themes & ideas into a vastly more gripping narrative.

💥 Regardless of where you land on Superman: Grounded, can we all agree that Chris Roberson’s Fortress of Solidarity was the best, most intriguing concept to come out of the storyline? If you don’t know what I’m talking about, then you must be behind on your DFK listening!

Thanks to everyone who’s already 🎧 to our Superman: GROUNDED talk! Last Summer, we looked at Chuck Austen’s infamous Action Comics run (“undapants,” remember?), and now it’s Grounded’s turn. Contrary to what one of you asked me recently, it’s not that I’m a glutton for punishment. 😂

But I do find it a particularly interesting & worthwhile exercise to examine these notorious entries in the Super canon and figure out what was going on — to achieve understanding, if not outright enjoyment. And I always appreciate you guys coming along on these rides.

If our discussion prompted any first reads, rereads, or reconsiderations of Grounded, please let us know! And for those of you who have no appetite for an actual reading, let our talk guide you through the story & be your Grounded experience.

🛣️ Time to hit the road with the Man of Steel! Tyler Patrick (Krypton Report Podcast) returns as we discuss “Grounded,” the notorious post-New Krypton, pre-New 52 storyline where Superman decides to walk across America to reconnect with humanity.

Notably, J. Michael Straczynski stepped back from the series after writing less than a handful of issues, with successor Chris Roberson working off of a very bare-bones “outline” JMS left behind.

I couldn’t have asked for a better guest on this one. As he says in his intro, Tyler is a fan of this run, and it was really awesome to hear what worked for him when most are quick to throw this one under the bus.

Now, don’t get me wrong: We have plenty of criticisms and armchair fixes, but still! 🎧 NOW as we break down what worked, what didn’t, and what happened with “Grounded.”
