It has been a hard and rough road to travel, combining work and studies - in person and hybrid at the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative Programme for one year.

I thank the Almighty for helping me complete this intensive Programme. This transformative journey has significantly enriched my leadership skills.
Reflecting back to my entry into office in 2018, I have confronted with lots of hurdles. However, overtime, I have made significant progress in various facets of leadership, including communication, attentive listening, and effective decision-making.

I invite you to join me in expressing gratitude to Bloomberg Harvard, REFELA and Banjul City Council for their invaluable guidance and mentorship throughout this journey. I wish to thank all those who supported me throughout this journey. My special appreciation goes to Dr. Juliet Sale - Regional Director for West Africa for United Cities and Local Governments of Africa and Adviser as President of REFELA who served as my day lecturer and my husband my mid-night lecturer who will push me all out to break barriers. Once again a big thank you to Gambia.

Today I participated in a United Nations Capital Development Fund High-Level Policy Dialogue of the Malaga Global Coalition for Municipal Finance. As you may well know, cities lack adequate funding to finance investments for service delivery at the local level. The funds transferred to the local level are not concomitant to the responsibility transferred and this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. For that reason, development partners are coming up with solutions that will enable cities to build infrastructure for service delivery at the local level to meet the Sustainable Development Goals. I was asked to share my experiences on the obstacles of female leadership to funding in cities and opportunities to promote women in politics. I explained my displeasure with the lack of access to development finance that hinders infrastructure development in my city Banjul. I also suggested a more women-friendly legislative framework to ensure an increase in the number of women in politics.

Town Hall Consultation - "Youth Volunteerism Project”

As Mayor of Banjul and President of Refela, this afternoon my team and I have conducted a town hall consultation for the "Youth Volunteerism Project" which was held at the McCarty Square, Banjul. The purpose of the consultation was to engage the youths from the three constituencies of Banjul in an enlightenment about the project, gather feedback, and answer their questions in mind.

The event saw an enthusiastic turnout, with approximately 200 youth attendees from various age groups and backgrounds. Some Representatives from the project team, were present to facilitate the discussions.

The consultation followed a structured agenda, designed to provide attendees with information about the project, encourage interactive discussions, and collect valuable feedback.

The project leaders delivered a comprehensive presentation outlining the goals, scope, and potential benefits of the Youth Volunteerism. The facilities, programmes, and activities were detailed, setting the stage for informed discussions. The open-floor discussion provided an opportunity for attendees to voice their questions, comments, and concerns. Participants engaged in lively conversations, sharing their perspectives on various aspects of the project, such as design, accessibility, and programme offerings. The project's timeline, milestones, and future engagement opportunities were discussed. Attendees were informed about how they can stay updated on project developments and continue to contribute their input.

The town hall consultation was marked by a palpable sense of enthusiasm and a strong desire among youth participants to contribute to the project's success. The event successfully fostered open dialogue, creative brainstorming, and meaningful interactions between the project team and the youth community.

I extend my sincere gratitude to all the youth attendees for their active participation, insightful contributions, and commitment to shaping "the Youth Volunteerism Project." Special thanks to the project team for their efforts in organizing and moderating the consultation.

Earlier today, I received in my office a renowned Liberian Youth Advocate, Stephens Audrey Kpao, Global Ambassador for Youth Empowerment, Climate Change & Advisor to the Senate of Liberia.

The highly respected activist was accompanied by Hon. Bully Dibba, the Gambia’s Head of Mission to Sierra Leone. Our discussion centered on possible partnerships, especially in the area of Youth Empowerment.

Stephens Audrey expressed a strong desire to work with me in addressing some of the challenges that often impact young people disproportionately, and finding ways to create limitless opportunities for them.

I also shared with him what my administration has been doing for young people in Banjul and The Gambia in general and some of our ongoing youth empowerment programs. I reiterated my commitment to working with youth advocates like him to create the right environment for young people to thrive.

I was happy to join my Christian family in celebrating the Assumption Day - To the Catholics, Assumption Day commemorates the belief that when Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ, died, her body was "assumed" into heaven to be reunited with her soul, instead of going through the natural process of physical decay upon death. The gathering was colorful and full of Grace. We prayed, ate, and engaged in networking as well.

I wish to thank my Christian brothers and sisters for their warm hospitality.
