Scaloni admits Argentina face tough road without Messi
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni conceded that the national team will face difficulties moving forward without some of its long-serving stars, most notably Lionel Messi. The challenge became evident in Tuesday’s 1-0 defeat to Ecuador.
With Ángel Di María now retired from international duty, Messi given a rest, and Nicolás Otamendi sent off just 31 minutes into the match in Guayaquil, a young Argentine side struggled. Enner Valencia converted a penalty deep into first-half stoppage time to give Ecuador the lead.
Despite Ecuador going down to 10 men after Moisés Caicedo’s dismissal in the 50th minute, Argentina—already assured of a place at next year’s World Cup—couldn’t find an equalizer in the second half.
Messi, an eight-time Ballon d’Or winner in his 22-year professional career, ended the South American qualifiers as top scorer for the first time, netting eight goals for his country.
