Creating With Kaya Content creator, blogger, and influencer tips I’ve learned on my journey to doing this full-time.

Being a creative person and running a creative business is a weird balancing act. Because as much as we don’t like hearing it… they are two different things. And I’m not particularly good at nurturing both sides of myself at the same time.

As a response to our feeds feeling increasingly less human, put out a challenge to create 7 videos with 7 unique voice overs, over 7 days. And the idea really resonated with me.

But when I set out to participate, I ended up putting a lot of pressure on myself from BOTH sides.

My creative side wanted to create a work of art, to *move* people, to be deep and thought-provoking… and realized that that part of my brain had been collecting a lot of dust.

Meanwhile, the business side wanted to maximize reach, and not mess with the momentum I was starting to build on after I had *JUST* started taking short form seriously again.

But alas. We created something.

Not strategic, not particularly thought-provoking. But a bit of expression nonetheless.

Here’s my day 1 of the . Not sure if I’ll make all 7, but it feels good to try.

The internet is overflowing with content, but it is NOT overflowing with the unique combo of your story, your perspective, and your taste.

The state of content creation is shifting rapidly, so if we actually want to persevere through it, it’s time to start doing some inner work, and be willing to do the hard work. 👀

I was shooting WAY. TOO. LONG. Without an ND filter. 🫠

It took me a while to really notice because I was mostly shooting indoors, but so many of my old shots had this weird washed out, blown out look and it was driving me crazy.

And I had bought a BUNCH of prime lenses for their low f stop… and felt like I could NEVER take full advantage for video.

Then I picked up some variable filters from on Amazon, and have NOT looked back since. 😭

Here’s a cheat sheet before the next video. 👇🏽

180° Degree rule: your shutter speed should be double your fps.

ND filters: Sunglasses for your camera, the key to keeping your aperture low in daylight.

Lighting: Ringlights are not actually your best friend. Look into 3 point lighting set ups!

I cannot COUNT how many creator friends I have that own solid cameras, but don’t bother with them because they are too overwhelmed.

So let’s fix that. Have camera questions, drop them below! ⬇️

(I’ll be sharing from the perspective of someone who loves camera gear and loves tech, but is NOT a cinematographer or any of that, so I promise the tips will be accessible!!)

A LOT of factors came together allowing me to take content creating full-time as a relatively small influencer..

and I think that’s the KEY to thrive “business” of being a creator.

It’s never just one thing that unlocks the ability to do this sustainably.

You need to find the recipe for success that works for YOU and your content style.

Making a second Instagram account was both the BEST decision…. And the most irresponsible ones. 🙃

I took a LONG break from short form content, focusing instead on longform video on the red play button app…

And while it was incredibly rewarding, I realized a lot of the people I was trying to reach, were over here consuming a lot of very intense, unnuanced, creator advice.

And if I wanted to challenge the narrative that you there is just ONE way to “make it” as a creator, I had to dive back into the vertical space.

That… and a lot of the companies I want to work with are ALSO focusing here, so I may have *some* ulterior motives. 🤭

Is it just my feed that is full of this “I’m stuck at x followers, what am I doing wrong?” trend?

People seem to be pumping them out via trial reels, and look, I get it.

It “works” for a reason.

People love sharing their opinions on the internet, so it’s going to get engagement.

It’ll also attract creators who are feeling stuck in their own journey.

But is that engagement true engagement that will build a community? Are those viewers going to stick around for *you*?

It’s an attempt at finding a shortcut that’s not going to benefit you in the long run.

I’m all for a good trend, but as someone who has some experience with going viral—I’ve learned to be a LOT more intentional with what I put out there.

Not everything has to be “business/brand-building” content, but if you are putting the effort in, there should still be some goal behind it past vanity numbers. 🫢
