The DD Superlight bike packer tarp and ground sheet set up in a shelter configuration. My sleep system is a sea to sumit sleeping pad with a sleeping pod liner covering that, then I wrap a one tigris down quilt around the pad then that goes into a OEX Bushpro bivi bag. 🪓 The Froe – Splitting Wood the Old Way 🌲

This illustration shows the froe, a traditional hand tool used for splitting wood with precision. Unlike an axe, it doesn’t chop—it cleaves wood along the grain. Here’s how it works:

---

🔹 How to Use a Froe (Step by Step)

1. Position the Froe
Place the flat blade across the top of a block of wood.

2. Strike with a Mallet
Use a heavy wooden mallet (often called a beetle or maul) to drive the froe blade down into the wood.

3. Twist the Handle
Once the blade is embedded, twist the handle to lever the wood apart along its natural grain.

---

🔹 What You Can Make

Shingles 🏠 – split thin slices for roofing.

Barrel Staves 🍷 – using a cooper’s curved froe for rounded wood pieces.

Clapboards 🪵 – for siding walls of houses.

---

✨ The genius of the froe is that it uses leverage, not brute force, making it more efficient than chopping. By following the wood grain, it produces stronger, straighter boards.

This is a campfire cooking pot hanger with an adjustable swing arm—a clever bushcraft setup for boiling water or cooking over an open flame without burning your hands. 🔥🍲

---

🧰 Materials

3 sturdy upright posts (forked branches preferred for two of them)

1 crossbar for the swing arm

1 vertical pot hanger stick

Rope or cordage

Cooking pot with bail handle

---

🔧 Step-by-Step Build

1️⃣ Set the Uprights

Drive two forked sticks firmly into the ground on either side of your fire pit.

These will support the horizontal swing arm.

2️⃣ Add the Swing Arm

Lay a straight stick across the forked uprights.

This arm will pivot, allowing you to swing your pot on/off the fire.

3️⃣ Attach the Pot Hanger

Suspend a vertical stick from the swing arm using a loop of cord.

The bottom of this stick should be above the fire area.

4️⃣ Stabilize with a Guy Line

Tie a guy line from the vertical stick to a third stake in the ground (behind the fire).

This prevents swinging in the wind and keeps the pot steady.

5️⃣ Pot Setup

Tie a short horizontal stick to the vertical hanger for the pot bail to rest on.

The illustration shows a round support cord with a tied knot holding the horizontal piece—this keeps it secure.

6️⃣ Adjusting Heat

Swing the arm sideways to remove the pot from the heat.

You can also shorten or lengthen the hanging cord to adjust cooking height.

---

💡 Advantages

Easy to swing food away from the heat for stirring or serving.

Keeps hands away from direct flame.

Simple to dismantle and transport.

I’ve been burning wood in this chimney for around 20 years. Not a primary heat source by any means. Usually light it when I get home from work and run it on weekends when it’s cold and then of course power outages. I’ve never cleaned it. Yea bad boy I know. It just doesn’t seem like it needs it does it? Took these pics yesterday.
