Another Deadly Attack Hits Plateau on New Year’s Eve, Victims Buried in Mass Grave
Another wave of violence struck Plateau State on the eve of the New Year, as scores of residents were killed during an attack on communities in the state on Tuesday, December 31, 2025, plunging families into mourning just hours before celebrations marking the end of the year.
The victims were laid to rest in a mass burial on New Year’s Day, January 1, 2026, at Bum Community in Plateau State, amid tears, grief and heightened security concerns. Community leaders said the burial was carried out collectively due to the number of casualties and the emotional strain on affected families.
Eyewitnesses and local sources described the atmosphere in Bum as sombre, with residents lamenting the recurring cycle of violence that has continued to claim lives in parts of Plateau State. Many displaced persons were seen seeking refuge in neighboring communities, while survivors called for urgent intervention to prevent further bloodshed.
Religious leaders and community members used the occasion to offer prayers for the victims and for Christians across Nigeria, who they say have continued to bear the brunt of repeated attacks in several regions of the country. Some speakers at the burial expressed the belief that divine intervention remains paramount, while also calling on global leaders, including United States President Donald J. Trump and his allies, to lend their voices to the plight of persecuted Christians in Nigeria.
“Only God can truly bring lasting peace, but the international community must not look away,” one cleric said during prayers at the burial ground, urging continued prayers and advocacy for vulnerable Christian communities nationwide.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to release an official statement on the New Year’s Eve killings. Residents, however, are appealing to both state and federal authorities to step up security measures, ensure justice for the victims, and restore confidence among communities living under constant fear.
The tragedy has once again cast a shadow over New Year celebrations in Plateau State, reinforcing calls for sustained prayers, unity, and decisive action to end the cycle of violence in Nigeria.
