The aircraft carrier USS MIDWAY (CV-41) prepares to depart from the naval station for the last time. The MIDWAY, which has been based in Japan since 1973, will be replaced by the aircraft carrier USS INDEPENDENCE (CV-62) as the Navy's forward-based aircraft carrier. The amphibious command ship USS BLUE RIDGE (LCC-19) is at upper left.

Aircraft line the decks of the aircraft carriers USS Midway (CV-41) and USS Independence (CV-62) as they lie side by side at Naval Air Station Pearl Harbor. Midway is en route from Naval Air Station Yokosuka, Japan, to Naval Air Station North Island, California, where she will be decommissioned in the spring of 1992. Independence will sail to Yokosuka to assume duties as the Navy's forward-based aircraft carrier.
