A new law will allow college graduates with training and a relevant bachelor’s degree to practice as behavioral health specialists in schools, in pediatric clinics, and in after-school programs.

The University of Oregon’s Ballmer Institute for Children’s Behavioral Health has been training undergraduates since 2022.

Daddy Victory Club is spotlighting modern Black fatherhood by building meaningful social connections.

Kouri Marshall told Block Club Chicago why he decided to launch the club.

“I know there’s not a general roadmap to parenting, but I was looking for resources or some guidance just to be prepared for the process,” he said. “Since I didn’t notice it, I created it.”

At meetups and through mentoring, fathers at various stages of parenting share what they’ve learned on the journey. Though the club was formed to support Black dads, Marshall emphasizes that “there is not a monopoly on fatherhood,” and dads from all backgrounds are welcome.

“Poverty makes people unhealthy; meanwhile, the cost of medical care often ruins families financially.” Rachel Pearson said. “Medical expenses can plunge a family into poverty.” In the richest country in the world, this is especially galling. (The New Yorker)

Cuts to federal health-care spending make it harder for doctors to make the oldest promise in medicine: that we will do no harm.

Too often, the writer says, the conversation around men’s mental health gets hijacked, either to justify violence or dismiss vulnerability.

Chicago promised a better way to handle mental health crisis calls, but the CARE program’s future is cloudy.

A six-month investigation by Medill Investigative Lab-Chicago and MindSite News found that CARE teams are responding to fewer and fewer mental health calls, that police are responding to the vast majority, and that the overall effort is hampered by dysfunction and bureaucratic infighting.

Operators answering 911 calls are dispatching CARE teams to mental health calls less frequently — a sign, former CARE staff members say, that dispatchers and first responders have lost confidence in the program.

Another hurdle looms, too: The federal COVID recovery funds that have paid for most of the program’s operations to date will run out next year.

A 567-mile trek to raise awareness – and money – for youth mental health.

Retired math teacher Clint Hedges decided to hike the entire Colorado Trail, a walk that includes eight mountain ranges and six wilderness areas, because he feels that his Jefferson County community never quite recovered after the pandemic. “There are definitely limited resources in this county and in a lot of rural communities,” Hedges told a local TV station.

Funds raised will go towards a new coffee shop and community hub – providing a space for connection as well as generating ongoing revenue for local outreach and mental health support. https://bit.ly/45hWKru (Denver7)

To get mental health benefits from exercise, it helps to enjoy what you’re doing.

Exercising with friends, for example, is more gratifying for many people than going solo. A new study on the issue, discussed in Futurity, confirms what many of us who’ve loved or hated a sport would agree: Context matters.

A new study shows that the mental health benefits of physical activity can vary depending on your environment and circumstances.

Dogs might be even better at helping people regulate stress than we suspected. ⬇️

In a new experiment shared by the website Good Good Good, scientists recruited 40 dog owners for a stress test involving public speaking and solving math problems aloud “in front of a panel of expressionless people posing as behavioral specialists.”

Half were randomly selected to bring their dog with them.

The results? Before-and-after blood tests for the stress hormone cortisol and the enzyme alpha-amylase – a biomarker for acute stress – showed “a more balanced response to stress” for people with canine companions beside them.

Dogs aren’t just good company. They might just be one of the most accessible and effective tools for staying healthy in a stressful world.
