Reports of landlords significantly raising rents beyond the permissible 10% during declared emergencies have sparked outrage.

Volunteer efforts reveal over a thousand rental units with questionable price hikes across various platforms.

California law, aimed at protecting evacuees during such crises, is being flagrantly disregarded by some property owners.

Governor Gavin Newsom's emergency declaration on January 7 initially enforced price gouging protections, yet some landlords have ignored these rules, with incidents reported in Pacific Palisades, Altadena, and Pasadena.

Advocacy groups like the L.A. Tenants Union demand rent freezes and seek to empower tenants through collective action, urging displaced residents to challenge unfair practices and report violations.
