HISTORY OF ISEYIN AND EBEDI

The emergence of Iseyin was not arbitrary; however, its geographical endowment was an attractive feast to the earlier farmers and hunters being a fecund forestland harbouring both mild and wild games, thereby promising to agriculturists and game-hunters to thrive upon. The slight modification in its landscape whereby Iseyinland tucks into itself within an expanse of land surrounded by four high hills has a link with history.

Aaba Odo-Iseyin with his people plumbed the depth of loneliness as the first set of settlers to exploit the earlier bewildered forest now called Iseyin. He was an ordinary hunter of no royal or chieftaincy extraction migrated from Ile-Ife for hunting purpose, so he could not have established himself as the owner of the land and probably the Oba. But he built for himself and his people a Camp Base at Ipokun where they rest and reside after daily work. The base was later relocated to Igbo-Odofin. Aaba belonged to Oro Creed.

Ipale, another valiant hunter, later joined Aaba and led his own people to settle at another part of the forest to continue their work. Like Aaba, he had no link with royal hegemony and he was also of Oro Creed. It is noteworthy that no name had been given to this forest at this time when these hunters were moving in.

Oke-esa and Jagun Ilado, in order, migrated in to settle as hunters. They together with their peoples settled at different portions of the land. Jagun had his Base at Igbo-Iwoye(in present Ilado Area). They were not different from the previous hunters in mission, origin and creed.

Aaba took it upon himself to convince the other hunters to visit Ebedi in submission, and he invited them to a meeting at their meeting place. They all came, and he discharged the message. Despite all his explanations, only Ipale and Jagun were convinced to visit Ebedi and they did so. Oke-Esa considered such invitation disdainful and refused to tow the path of his colleagues. When Ebedi got wind of this, he was not hesitant to place a statement on Oke-Esa, and put an eternal ban on him and his descendants from being a chief or community head in history of Iseyin. And since then no Aseyin has dared it appoint anybody as Baale in Oke-esa Community till today.

All the other three hunters were appointed the heads of their respective communities. Their titles are Aaba Odo-Iseyin (Dunmoba Community), Ipale (Ekunle Community), Jagun (Ilado Community). Ipale was also given the right to apportion land to strangers who wished to settle in Iseyinland. Among the beneficiaries were Baale Koso and his people, Onikosa and his people, Baale Ladogan and his people, and many others.

Aaba later made arrangement to settle Ebedi at Ekunle, he accepted and settled there. Ebedi was of Sango Creed (Sango god of thunder), but for the humility of the three hunters submitted to him who were of Oro extraction, he approved Oro Oracle as the official oracle with which Iseyin was created, and decided to honour it by celebrating it yearly(the time during which women in the town are confined in for some hours daily for a week, and peaked the seventh and seventeenth day with full day confinement). And this was the beginning of yearly Oro festival in Iseyin as depicted in one of its panegyrics `Iseyin Oro Omo Ebedi`. In addition, he endorsed `sacrifice to Oro` a part of rites necessary to make any Aseyin.

Then, after when Ebedi had settled down at Ekunle, as a valiant and responsible leader he deemed it necessary to provide security for his subjects against external aggression and intrusion rampant then. So he set out to Dahomey(now Benin Republic) to seek powers to ward off insurgence and enslavement from this newly established town christened Iseyin, the name emanated from palm kanel proccessing. The assignment took Ebedi a very long length of time which his people construed to mean that he had been beset with a calamity beyond his control so made his return impossible.

And a community without a leader is on the brink of disorder, they decided to appoint an Oba. They chose Ebide’s brother Ogbolu as the first Aseyin of Iseyinland. The event turned dramatic at the time Ogbolu’s intallation ceremony was at his peak, Ebedi resurface with an army of supporters including sophisticated security experts and servants both males and females.

Not too far at the outskirts, Ebedi caught winds of drum beats and tunes signifying a grand celebrating in the town. Ebedi ordered his entourage to stop a bit, he sighted a pregnant woman plucking leaves nearby, and he approached her and elicited from her what was happening in the town.

Ebedi was sad and disappointed with the development. With courage and a great sense of patriotism, he sent all his security outfits he brought from Dahomey and their usage through the women to his sibling, the new Oba. He informed the woman to instruct Ogbolu that he could no more enter the town to avert anarchism or possible breakdown.

Consequently, Ebedi transmogrify into a high hill (Ebedi Hill). Thus, it has been in tradition that all installed Aseyins must make sacrifice to Ebedi Hill yearly. His entourage followed the same footstep. Ogba, one of his charms experts transformed to river (Odo-Ogba) and channeled across through the length of Iseyinland. His chief servants; Oluofi, Eyinjue and Atamafon also transform into high hills at different location on the outskirts of the town making Iseyin to be surrounded by four historical hills. Others in the entourage who transformed into rivers are Igbobi, Atori and Ajumoda. Ogidiyi, Adabo, Iserin and Okutapamo also transformed into some other things out of disappointment and inability to go back to Dahomey.

This made Ebedi a very popular hero and most mentioned name in the history of Iseyin, and that Ebedi is a substitute to Iseyin as the name of the town.

The first eleven to ascend the prestigious throne were from patricia lineage. Abu Oniside was the 11th Aseyin. He went to war in Ondo for so long a time that the palace became benighted.

Then the princess Ogbekun Omosopo Adeyi called on the council of chiefs to find a replacement for the Oba in war as they presumed him dead thereupon his inability to return. The chiefs reasoned and made moves to install another person as Oba. But, because Aseyins then did not live long, all the princes where chary of ascend the throne. Also, nobody wanted to release his son for the job. The chiefs invited princess Ogbekun and informed her about the development and she was charged to release her son. She accepted and went to Alaafin of Oyo to inform him of the development and that Alaafin should endorse her matrimonial family lineage to be producing the Aseyin of Iseyinland as agreed upon by her and the council of chiefs. Based on the reasons adduced, Alaafin endorsed the move.
Princess Ogbekun invited his son, Ajisibi Alao who was far away at Ajase. Ajisibi came home with his first son Akando Ariwi. On gething home, Ajisibi was informed that he would be the next Aseyin of Iseyinland. He accepted to become the 12th king of the land. Akando took over after the death of his father in 1833 as the thirteenth Aseyin. Oba (Dr) Abodul Ganiyu Adekunle Salau (Ologunebi-Ajinese I) is the 29th and the incumbent Aseyin of Iseyinland. He ascended the throne in 2006 after the demise of his predecessor Late Oba Ganiyu Adebayo Alobalowo II.

The clash Between Eedris Abdulkareem & 50 cent and how they settled on Stage.

50 cent had visited Nigeria in 2004 alongside his crew headlining a four-city concert tagged ‘Star Mega Jams. The concert which was to hold in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt and Benin featured the then Nigeria Stars such as Daddy Showkey, Eedris Abulkareem himself, Abass Akande Obesere, Tony Tetula and many many others.

The Concert began in Abuja on Wednesday the 3rd of December 2004 and was held at the Eagle Square ground in Garki.

After Tony one-week performance, 50 Cent and his G Unit group took to the stage to give an overwhelming performance despite the poor sound production.

Shortly after he began his performance the crowd surge threateningly forward to touch him. While the security attempt to push the crowd back, he screamed: “Leave ma people! Let ma brothas come near!”

He further sealed the memorable night when he brought out a bundle of $50 notes and spray into the teeming crowd who scrambled to grab the notes. He did this three times at intervals spraying about $15,000 before wrapping up his performance in Abuja. He would repeat the same act during his performance in Lagos.

After 50 cent performance, Daddy Showkey took the stage and thrilled the audience with his music and Galala style. Daddy Showkey’s performance was followed by Eedris Abdul Kareem who seem to have an issue with 50 Cent when he grabbed the microphone, and said: “50 Cent na oga for America, me I be Oga for rap for Nigeria!”

The Concert in Abuja was closed after Abass Akande Obesere entertained the audience with his Fuji tunes.

On Friday the 3rd of December 2004, the second round of the concert was held at the Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos State, the invited artiste gave the audience a double portion of the thrilling performance they had in Abuja until when Eedris took the stage after 50 cent’s performance where he claimed he is the ‘oga of rap music in Nigeria’, the chides for scrambling for the money 50 Cent threw to the crowd. “Him dey try tell us say Nigerians na beggars? This na insult on my people.

The clash however happened when Eedris Abdulkareem put up a fight with 50 Cent’s crew over sitting arrangement in the plane chattered for the purpose of conveying the American rap icon to the concert venues.

According to reports, while waiting at the airport lounge minutes before he boarded the plane, Edris had promised that “I am going to show these people (organisers) that Nigerian artistes deserve respect.”

Once onboard, he deliberately sat on the very seat reserved for 50 Cent in the first-class compartment of the aircraft insisting that “This is where I am going to sit!”. The same first-class seat he bluntly declined two days earlier.

security detail from G-Unit asked him to move to the back section where the local acts were seated. Eedris refused to move, claiming he was meant to sit in front.

And as narrated by eyewitnesses, one thing led to the other, a scuffle ensued between his men and those of 50 Cent. An embarrassed Eedris who had one of his boys injured reportedly ranted: “Let us get to Port Harcourt, 50 Cent, I will show you that this is my country. I will deal with you.”

50 Cent and his band had to leave the country prematurely on the advice of the American Embassy in Nigeria.

The long-standing feud between Nigerian singing superstar Eedris Abdulkareem and international rap star 50 Cent was brought to an abrupt, shocking end Thursday night at the media launch of the KORA Awards in Abuja in 2007

Right after the American artiste's performance, the compere announced to 50 Cent and the audience that "An African brother is going to come onstage and show you some African love." Abdulkareem surfaced from a corner into the spotlight, causing the audience to erupt in applause as soon as it was clear who he was.

Abdul Kareem apologized to 50 cent right on stage.

"Ijebu Ode History"

Ijebu also known as Jebu or Geebu is a Yoruba kingdom in Nigeria. It was formed around the fifteenth century.

According to legend, its ruling dynasty was founded by Obanta whose personal name was Ogborogan of Ile-Ife. Its contemporary successor is one of the country's traditional states.

The kingdom was one of the most developed in the region with a complex and highly organized government.

The capital is at Ijebu Ode where the Awujale has his palace. Counterbalancing the Awujale is the Osugbo (known as the Ogboni in other parts of Nigeria), a council of all free born, titled men that acted as the kingdom's courts.

The Osugbo is divided into six groups based on rank, the highest being the iwarefa, whose head the Oliwa was the second most powerful figure in the nation.

Also powerful is the Olisa, who could be described as the mayor of Ijebu Ode. The Kingdom was made up of several towns and stretches to parts of Lagos State and borders Ondo State.

The state rose in power in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, mainly due to its important position on the trade routes between Lagos and Ibadan.

The kingdom imposed sharp limits on trade, insisting that all trade through the region be conducted by Ijebu merchants. The monopoly brought great wealth to the kingdom, but also annoyed the Europeans.

In 1892, the British Empire declared war on the Ijebu kingdom in response to its barriers on trade.

The British emerged victorious in the conflict and captured the Ijebu capital, burning the meeting hall of the Osugbo. As noted by colonial governor Frederick Lugard, 1st Baron Lugard, the British made efficient use of the Maxim gun during the conflict; when Lugard defended himself in response to criticism of the high casualties rates caused by Maxim guns employed by troops under his command during military campaigns in the Uganda Protectorate, he stated: "On the West Coast, in the 'Jebu' war, undertaken by Government, I have been told 'several thousands' were mowed down by the Maxim."

After British colonization, the capital served as an administrative center for colonial officials as the kingdom was annexed to the colony of Southern Nigeria. Today, it constitutes one of the traditional states of Nigeria.

The Ijebu kingdom is governed by a king and his group of titled elders, who usually are men of a higher status and of considerable influence.

The council governed the region and had representatives of further devolved councils who no longer have any power.

Since the invasion of Lord Lugard, these councils have continued to meet and advise the Obanta kings, their power, however, is largely ceremonial since the establishment of the colonial administration in their protectorate.

The elders were known to represent their various villages and the will of the people, and are now not such a significant part in the ceremonial process.

The elders were all given individual titles and the lead elder was given the title prince, although he was only ever to inherit the kingship in special circumstances.

The traditional belief that governed the monarchy was similar to that of the Chinese Mandate of Heaven.

The Ijebu Kingdom is estimated to be one of the earliest kingdoms founded in the African rain forest. Ijebu-Ode was originally a city founded by a leader from Ife.

Like most other early states in the Yoruba region, they began to build a series of walls and ditches around the city, construction of these walls began in 800–1000 AD when the walls were called Sungbo’s Eredo.

The walls extended to eventually cover the entirety of the Ijebu kingdom. It was massive with an estimated 3.5 million cubic meters of moved earth and sand and is among the largest man-made monuments in Africa.

The evidence found is not linked to an isolated townbut to a kingdom’s large d**e, a kingdom which was once functional and had at its disposal a high level of agricultural practice, an established pottery-making tradition, and possibly an army that triggered the construction of the Eredo.

Further archeological works show the advancement of the Ijebu kingdom, the palace of the capital, Ijebu-Ode was shown to have the floors paved with ceramic pavements.

People at the palace also seemed to practice astronomy with triangular pavements facing a true eastern direction; it extreme aligns to the movement of the sun from one solar solstice to the other one and worked as a sundial.

Europeans also had a first hand account of Ijebu and wrote about it. Portuguese sailors and traders on the West African coast encountered the Ijebu kingdom first in which they called Geebu in the 1508...
