Hi from Harry Shannon Phillips,
I am the president of the Phillips Historic Cemetery Association. East Chapel now sits where Jack Phillips plantation home used to sit and I have a photo of his home. He farmed 3000 acres down to the river before he died and was buried in the cemetery in 1868. His family cemetery is a few blocks north of you on CR33. We want new burials there if we can get a survey. Since it is a private cemetery we recieve no funding from the county or state. By 1995 most of the family had forgotten the cemetery and it became overgrown. Our committee cleaned it up and we are trying to establish a perpetual funds via donations to ensure its upkeep. Mark Narmore, a local songwriter who lives in Center Star is doing a benefit on August 23rd to raise money for the fund. We are looking for business and individual sponsors for the show and all proceeds go to the cemetery fund. Business sponsors are Franks Country Financial Insurance, Williams Funeral Home, Singing River Realty who have agreed to be sponsors along with a few individual families. Names of sponsors will be recognized in the East Lauderdale News and in other media and at the show. Hundreds of Jack Phillips' descendants live in Lauderdale County and thousands across the country. Capt.John Robert Mitchell, a civil war hero, is buried there and his folks have helped maintain the part of the cemetery but not all. Hundreds of the Mitchells attend their reunion that is held the second week of August. Read the historic marker in front of Elkins' Chapel. It is ok but the information is far from complete. We want a second marker to fill in missing info and hope we can count on your help to be sponsor of the show to raise funds and come to the show.
P. S. Two sets of Phillips who not related are buried in the Jack Phillips cemetery. McPeters are kin to Jack Phillips via William Andrew McPeters vIa William Andrew McPeters who married Serena Ann Phillips, the daughter of Jack Phillips.

Food for thought…..If you have family or close loved ones buried at a local church cemetery, please consider contributing to that particular church’s cemetery fund, regardless of your affiliation with that church, or your opinion about their chosen denomination or method of worship. The money will be earmarked for necessary upkeep of the cemetery. Without donations, the church must dip into its own funds donated by members to keep the grass cut, fences fixed, ensure accurate record keeping, etc etc. for YOUR family. If the idea of donating money is tough for you, feel free to donate your time to weedeat, pull weeds, cut grass, or pick up fake flowers blown off graves after a storm. Anything. Future generations seeking to learn of their past will thank you.
