If you watch royal coverage, you’ve likely seen John Loughrey, a well-known royal superfan who camps out for major events. At this year’s Sandringham Christmas Day walk, his interactions with Prince William and Princess Kate’s family (especially Prince George) were unusually long and familiar. They also included repeated references to Princess Diana while speaking directly to the kids - which are now garnering headlines.

William and Kate handled it professionally, but the exchanges raise bigger questions about boundaries, fandom, and emotional access to royals…particularly when children are involved.

The Prince and Princess of Wales are joint patrons of the Hospital, and it’s where Kate says she received her own cancer treatment in 2024.

In a year when the lead-up to the Royal Family’s Christmas featured plenty of trials, scandal, and speculation, it was a subtle reminder that this will be a holiday that also sees the family in better spirits than last year. Kate announced she was in remission in January, at the same time as her Royal Marsden visit, and King Charles recently revealed that his own cancer treatment schedule will be reduced in the new year.

A pared back Christmas walk this year, as the royal family attends Christmas Day services at St Mary Magdalene Church at Sandringham…but did not stop to greet well-wishers as has become custom.

While Andrew Mountbatten Windsor was absent after a year of scandal, his daughters Princess Eugenie and Princess Beatrice (after a season of speculation) were there with their husbands, Jack Brooksbank and Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

The family presented an otherwise united front in shades of brown, burgundy, and bright red. More fashion analysis soon!
