Couple Arrested for Locking Chinese Tourists in Car and Demanding RM836 Fare

SEPANG, Sept 22 — Police have arrested a couple accused of extorting two Chinese tourists after allegedly locking them inside a car and demanding RM836, despite first agreeing to a fare of RM60.

The incident took place on September 15 at Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2). The victims, two women from China, were approached by the suspects who offered them a ride to their hotel. Believing the quoted RM60 fare was reasonable, the tourists accepted.

However, instead of taking them directly to their destination, the couple allegedly diverted the trip and later demanded RM836. When the tourists refused, they were reportedly locked inside the car. One of the women was also slapped several times, according to police reports.

Hotel staff intervened after hearing the victims’ cries for help. A video of the confrontation later went viral on social media, prompting swift action from authorities.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke confirmed that enforcement officers conducted an operation and arrested the male suspect. The vehicle used, a Perodua Axia, has been seized.

“These touts are leeches tarnishing Malaysia’s image. We will not tolerate anyone exploiting tourists in this way,” Loke said.

Police have opened investigation papers, and the suspects are expected to face charges under laws covering extortion and illegal touting.

The victims, though shaken, were not seriously injured and have since lodged formal complaints. Authorities said they would tighten enforcement at airports to prevent similar cases.
