Spatter.

Among the things that will always amaze me during volcanic eruptions is the hypnotic dance of molten lava fragments above the craters' rims.

Framing a sharp moment of these ever-changing volcanic choreographies and patterns is often tricky, a battle against volcanic gases and the intense heat rising from the active vents.

Here's a closeup shot of lava spatter dancing above the crater, taken two days ago.

Something completely unrelated, but yesterday evening, we lost one of the greatest artists of our time. Someone who gave us countless moments of unforgettable music over the past decades. The father of heavy metal. Farewell, Ozzy. Thank you for everything, from Paranoid to the final Sabbath concert just a couple of weeks ago. See you on the other side.

Closeups.

Despite I often prefer wider views to have an overall idea of the extent of the volcanic activity and to put in context the events during an eruption, I love spending time focusing on details. Nowadays with drones it's way easier than before to get closer to spot once very hard, or impossible to reach, and to capture details exploiting the higher and higher quality this tools are providing.

Here a few clips with lava details shot the second day of the ninth eruptive episode of the 2023-2025 eruption of Svartsengi volcanic system.

And what do you prefer? Wider or closer shots?

Cones.

Last night I paid another visit to the eruption site to document the evolution of this ninth episode of the 2023-2025 eruption of Svartsengi volcanic system.

The eruption looked pretty stable during the last 24 hours. Also, the volcanic tremor didn't show any major variation in the same period.

The activity is now produced by two main craters. The southern one has three active vents inside and the northern one, smaller, just two.

Here is a view of the two cinder cones growing around the vents, around 11pm last night.

Ninth.

Yesterday morning the ninth eruptive episode of the 2023-2025 eruption of Svartsengi volcanic system started around 03:54 am.

I was ending a ring road tour with Italian tourists in the morning and I managed to reach the eruption site only in the evening, documenting the event for AP.

Here a few scenes from last night.

Ash.

One year ago today, the third paroxysmal activity of Mt. Etna in 2024.
That evening the Voragine crater produced up to 1200 meter-high (3900 ft) lava fountains and an ash plume which reached over 6000 meters above sea level and caused tephra fallout on the southeastern slopes of the volcano.

After the sequence started on July 04th last year, I decided to book a flight hoping to see a paroxysm, many years after my last one in 2016. I got lucky enough to catch one, the second night I was there, but the whole week was full of nice moments with mild activity from the Voragine crater and the Northeast crater.

Here a few shots of that amazing night.

Photos of the Year.

It's been a huge honor to see my photos in the yearly recaps of several newspapers and news media worldwide.
Four of my photos have been featured in a few different "photos of the year" galleries:

2024 has been an incredible year for me professionally. I'm not going to focus here on my last year's recap, which tbh I didn't make yet (I was busy guiding last week). That would require a separate post.

A huge thank you to the AP editors for their work, the support, the constant advice and feedback.

Here are the photos that have been selected and the newspapers that featured them.

Etna.

It's always amazing to be back here.
I took advantage of the only week off from work this summer to pay a visit to my homeland and to the volcano I grew up on.
In the last couple of weeks the summit crater named "Voragine" has been very active, with an almost constant strombolian activity and a couple of paroxysmal episodes with high lava fountains and ash plumes.
Last night I spent a few hours on the eastern side of the mountain to enjoy several explosions and we also observed a couple of gas rings (pic in my stories).
During the day, from the towns around the volcano, the sound of the explosions is pretty loud and impossible to ignore.
Even though Etna is capable of way stronger activity, this was a fairly good start of this trip.

Excited to see what will come next.

Teaser.

Stabilizing.

A view of the two main active sections of the eruptive fissure yesterday evening, May 30th.
In the background is visible another small active vent at the northern end of the fissure, which is visible as a dark line behind the vents erupting in the central part of the pic.

A couple of hours after the impressive beginning the activity dropped rapidly and since Wednesday evening it has somehow stabilized.

The eruption continues.

Chapter 5.

The fifth eruptive episode of the 2023-24 eruption of Svartsengi volcanic system started this morning at 12:45.

The Icelandic Met Office stated that the fissure is 3,4km long and the effusive rate is between 1,500 and 2000 cubic meters per second.

Here are two of my first shots I took roughly 20-30 minutes after the beginning of it.

More soon.
