Powerful that struck a large portion of and northwest on Monday, Feb 6, claimed more than 2,800 lives, with freezing winter weather leaving thousands injured and homeless while rescue efforts continue. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake destroyed entire apartment buildings in Turkish cities and piled more devastation on millions of displaced Syrians due to years of war.
The earthquake struck before sunrise and was immediately followed by another sizable earthquake in the early afternoon.
The second earthquake was powerful enough to bring down more buildings, threatening the lives of rescue workers who were attempting to rescue victims from the rubble.
