Nuusuatia was pleased to host the GEF-8 Blue and Green Islands Integrated Programme – Coastal Resilience Samoa (BGI-IP CRS) Project consultation for the communities of Safata 1 and Safata 2 on Thursday, 20 August 2026. 📍

The consultation was led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) in collaboration with UNDP, with funding support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF).

The project aims to strengthen the resilience of our communities, ecosystems and natural resources against the impacts of climate change and other environmental pressures, with a strong focus on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) and sustainable management of our coastal and natural environments.

The consultation provided an important opportunity for representatives from Safata 1 and Safata 2 to hear about the project’s planned activities and, most importantly, to share their views, concerns, priorities and local knowledge.

Our communities have valuable knowledge about our land, sea and environment. Their participation is therefore essential in ensuring that future interventions reflect the realities and priorities of the people who live here.

The consultation also contributes to the project’s Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices (KAP) Survey, which will help establish baseline information on how communities understand and manage issues relating to coastal resilience, natural resources and environmental conservation.

Fa'afetai tele lava to MNRE, UNDP, GEF and all representatives from Safata 1 and Safata 2 who participated and shared their knowledge and perspectives.

Building resilience is a shared responsibility. By working together and valuing our local knowledge, we can help protect our coasts, oceans, land and natural resources for our children and future generations.

In Loving Memory of Maatasesa Tupai John Matthes 🕊️🤍

Today, Nuusuatia Media joins our community in remembering and honouring the life, service, and lasting contribution of Maatasesa Tupai John Matthes.

She was a beloved wife to Tupai John Matthes, a faithful servant of the Nuusuatia Ward, and a woman whose life was devoted to serving God, her community, and her people.

For many years, Maatasesa dedicated herself to the nursing profession, serving our country and caring for generations of Samoans through her work in health. Her commitment to nursing later led her to the National University of Samoa, where she served as a leader within the Faculty of Nursing. Through her leadership, knowledge, and passion for education, she helped guide and shape generations of nurses who continue to serve Samoa and beyond.

Her contribution went far beyond her profession. She was a woman of faith, service, compassion, and dedication. Her presence in our community touched many lives, and the legacy she leaves behind will continue through the people she served, taught, encouraged, and inspired.

Nuusuatia Media respectfully honours her life and service. We extend our heartfelt condolences to her husband, family, loved ones, the Nuusuatia Ward, former colleagues, students, and all those who were blessed to know her.

“Well done, good and faithful servant.” — Matthew 25:23

May her life of service never be forgotten.
May her legacy continue to inspire future generations.
May she rest peacefully in the loving arms of our Lord. 🕊️🤍

Fa'afetai tele lava, Maatasesa, for a life well lived and a service well given.

Throwback to an article published by the Samoa Observer on 28 August 2016, featuring one of our own community members, Salome Mulipola of Nuusuatia Safata, sharing her thoughts on life in the village.

Salome spoke proudly about the simple way of living in Nuusuatia, reminding many that true wealth is not always measured by money, but by family, culture, faith, and the strong bond within the community. Her words reflected the resilience and humble spirit of village life in our community.

Today, we proudly reshare this story as a reminder of the values and strength of our people in Nuusuatia.

34 years old, Salome Mulipola, wants Samoa to know that there is nothing wrong with living a simple life.

Hailing from the village of Nuusuatia, Safata, with her husband and children, Salome is happy with the peaceful life she has in the village.

“Life here in the villages is great,” she tells the Sunday Samoan.

“The truth is, there is no one in this village causing trouble and I know we have the village council to thank for that.

“Our village morals are very strong here in Nuusuatia.”

People always feel like fancy cars and big houses will make them happy but Salome’s joy for the simple things shows you don’t need to live and extravagant life to be happy.

“Our way of life here in the rural areas is very simple,” she says.

“We don’t rely too much on things like those in Apia do and that helps us to appreciate what we have no matter how little it may be.

“Those in the town area rely heavily on people who have jobs but over here we rely on the land; our plantation is our source of money as well as our source of food.”

And when it comes to the ongoing debate of whether Samoa has poverty or not, Salome says that poverty is only there when people are lazy.

“There is no poverty in Samoa,” she says.

“People are only poor because they are very lazy, they don’t want to work to live and that causes a lot of problems. Sitting around will not get anyone anywhere.

“My family is a big on and no one works; I have to tend to my plantation every day to be able to provide for them all.

“With the little money we get at times, we use it for village and church activities and nothing goes.”

Salome also feels that people are also poor because they do not know how to manage their money properly.

“Even though we make little with our plantation we still manage to put our children through school,” she says.

“We also have a plantation for Nonu where we supply Skyline with the fruit and that gets us a bit of extra money.

“Life is only hard if you make it hard. But if you want to live a simple life then always be grateful with what you have.”
