The brothers were just 3 months old when they were separated from their mother, who had brought them to the hospital with a sick older sibling in Santiago in 1986. Someone from the hospital offered to look after the babies while she tended to her other child, Elan explains to PEOPLE in this week's issue: "Later, when she tried to find where they were caring for us, they slammed the door in her face."
She went to the police, but by the time help arrived, the babies were gone. Tap the link in bio for the full story. l 📷: MyHeritage.com

In his keynote speech focused on global politics at The Obama Foundation Democracy Forum, Obama said “one of humanity’s greatest achievements in the modern era has been the recognition” that diverse sets of people need to be represented in government, but added that it also has led “people who are accustomed to being at the top of the pecking order … to feel their status in society threatened when the existing order goes through rapid changes.”
“We’re going to have to figure out how to live together, or we will destroy each other,” he said.
The former president also warned that “escalating polarization and disinformation so evident in recent elections” occurred in the United States, as well as Brazil, the Philippines, Italy and Sweden.

The money, which came from two anonymous wealthy donors, was distributed on PayPal through a partnership with the organization TED.
The group that got $10,000 reported higher levels of happiness than those who did not after their three months of spending. Then, after three more months had passed, the recipients still reported levels of happiness higher than when the experiment started.
However, people with household incomes above $123,000 did not report noticeable improvements in their happiness.

The runoff will take place on Dec. 6, according to the Georgia secretary of state’s office. Both campaigns were bracing for this Tuesday night as the results came in and showed a close contest.
The contest pitted Warnock, who was elected in a 2020 special election, against Walker, a former football star who was encouraged by former President Donald Trump to run. Walker, a first-time political candidate, drew an early endorsement from Trump and all but cleared the Republican primary field.

A rising star in the GOP, DeSantis defined his first term as governor with resistance to pandemic-era restrictions and brash right-wing stances on America’s culture wars, writes Madeleine Carlisle.
His funding vastly outpaced that of his opponent Democrat Charlie Crist, and DeSantis focused his campaign on criticizing Democrats for what he described as the “woke agenda.” Widely considered to be a future Republican presidential contender, the conservative firebrand made headlines this year for his stances on LGBTQ issues, handling of immigration policy and investigations into alleged voter fraud.

But experts say the rate of strokes is increasing among young people and a new study suggests alcohol consumption may have something to do with it.
Researchers used a Korean national health database to study 1.5 million people in their 20s and 30s and asked them about their alcohol consumption over the course of six years, according to the study published Wednesday in Neurology, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.
They found young people who were considered moderate to heavy drinkers were more likely to have a stroke compared to those who were considered light drinkers or didn’t drink alcohol at all.

Posted • Ron Danta and Danny Robertshaw have devoted their lives to dogs.
Based in South Carolina, the couple first connected over a shared love of animals. Danta and Robertshaw, equestrian trainers by trade, met at a horse show and tell PEOPLE that when they first got to know each other, "there was a gradual awareness that we had a lot in common when it came to feelings for animals."
"I would bring a couple of puppies from the pound to a horse show," Robertshaw says, "and Ron would be one of the first people to come over and hold them, talk to people about adopting them."
This mutual appreciation for helping animals and a self-described tendency to "jump in with both feet" led the couple to rescue dogs and save around 600 canines caught in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.
After this heroic effort, Danta and Robertshaw officially dedicated themselves to dog rescue and founded the nonprofit Danny & Ron's Rescue. More on their efforts in our bio link! | 📷: Courtesy of Danny & Ron’s Rescue / Photographer Michael Schofield

Neal Collins (R) recounted the arduous journey faced by a 19-year-old of an abortion ban he himself supported. Collins said that the woman’s fetus was not viable but that attorneys told her doctor they couldn’t extract it because it still had a heartbeat — the standard set in the law supported by Collins that had gone into effect just the week before. “They discharged that 19-year-old,” Collins said. “The doctor told me at that point there is a 50 percent chance — well, first she’s going to pass this fetus in the toilet. She’s going to have to deal with that on her own. There’s a 50 percent chance — greater than 50 percent chance that she’s going to lose her uterus. There’s a 10 percent chance that she will develop sepsis and herself die.” Collins added: “That weighs on me. I voted for that bill. These are affecting people.”
Posted @withregram • @timesofindia Mexican-American female arrested after racist attack on four Indian women Police in Plano, Texas, arrested a Mexican-American woman on Thursday on charges of assault and "terroristic threats" after she attacked four Indian women in a parking lot as they came out of a restaurant in a shocking incident captured on videos that have since gone viral. Authorities said the woman, identified as Esmeralda Upton, is also being investigated for hate crime, and additional charges may be forthcoming. She is being held on a bond of $10,000, police said, releasing what they described as "jail photo." The incident took place on Thursday night in Plano, a Dallas suburb with significant Indian population, when the four Indian women emerged from a restaurant and headed towards their cars in a largely empty parking lot. They are accosted by Upton, who launches into a racist rant saying “We don't want you here....Go back to India." "You curry-assed people are ruining this country," she rages. When the Indian women ask her why she did she walk up too them to talk uninvited, she rages, "Because I hate you f**king Indians, that's why." As the bewildered Indian women recover and ask her how she could be talking like that when she herself -- obvious from her accent-- is a Latina the woman says in a Hispanic accent, “I’m Mexican-American. I speak English," the irony totally lost on her. By this time the Indian women have been recording the exchange on their cell phones, agitating Upton, who strikes out at the women in an effort to grab the phones. At one point she threatens them with dire consequences and dips her hand into a large handbag seeming to reach for a weapon.
