Today’s release has been in the hopper for a while. It’s been a struggle for me to write about it because it’s currently a very divisive issue and I’m pretty tired of being divided at every turn. It’s like we can’t even entertain another point of view anymore on anything without being cruelly smacked down. We’ve stopped listening and are only interested in putting forward our own view and to be proved “right”. Humanity is not a right or wrong, right or left, male or female, black or white experience. It’s messy and complicated. We all feel the same emotions, but our ideas about our individual experience limit us when trying to understand another’s. We are all involved in “the othering” to some extent and this is our failing. Our individual work demands us to examine and overcome our prejudices. Extreme views are not likely to be changed, but there are far more people with a moderate viewpoint. We’ve allowed institutions to divide us and we are in a desperate situation. This episode is for those that welcome a different perspective or are seeking knowledge in the interest of expanding themselves and improving the human experience for ALL of us.

My guest in this episode is the wonderful Reem Borrows, https://www.reemborrows.com/ the author of the excellent book: From the River to the Sea: Humanizing Freedom. Reem is a Palestinian Christian (yes, they exist) and this book was written prior to the most recent conflict in the Middle East. Her book is a fresh and compassionate writing on the Israeli-Palestinian plight. It is a call for empathy as a guiding principle to engage in meaningful dialogue on this contentious issue. Most of us want an empathetic and constructive path forward. Continued division and the subsequent violence as a result is not the answer and most of us are exhausted by it. We keep repeating history and nothing has been resolved. We are now seeing our institutions implementing the same tactics which were used to divide this region in many other areas of the globe to shocking and frightening results. Every tragic situation we are facing is connected, we are not separate in our suffering. True division is a result of a core belief that we are better than others. We do not have to live this way. Why are we allowing ourselves to be led by hatred and fear? Open your heart and mind, expand yourself, because all our lives depend on each of us doing this work. We must learn to lead with both our beautiful mind and open heart but instead, we have shut off our hearts. We feel so little because it is terrifying to feel. How can we solve global issues if we can’t engage with our hearts as individuals on a daily basis in our interactions with each other? It’s not a call for us to look for who to blame for what has happened but an acknowledgement that we have a responsibility to change it. Our judgement does not align with our soul. I encourage everyone that wants something different to listen to this episode and read the book!

For our next episode, we talk to the amazing Maria Treadaway from NZ. (I know so many rad people from NZ!) Maria has been involved in multiple legs of the Clipper Round the World Yacht race. The Clipper Race is one of the biggest challenges of the natural world and an endurance test like no other.

With no previous sailing experience necessary, amateurs can sign up for the intensive training programme, and be part of a record-breaking 40,000 nautical mile race around the world on a 70-foot ocean racing yacht. The route is divided into eight legs and between 13 and 16 individual races including six ocean crossings. You can choose to complete the full circumnavigation or select one or multiple legs.

We talk to Maria about her experience which is fascinating. Also, if you, like me are tired of hearing my voice, Maria has a lovely voice, well spoken, eloquent and features more heavily than myself. I'm in awe of her Radness!

What does ageing mean these days? We kick off Season 2 with a fantastic episode with the wonderful Alex Rotas, who photographs athletes very late in life, some still competing in their 90’s! As she says on her website: “Hi, I’m Alex. I hope that my images remind us all of what’s possible as we age and force us to think again about our attitudes towards ageing.” It started when Alex was looking for older athletes online and found……nothing. She decided that she was going to start documenting these competitive men and women, bought a camera in 2011 and has never looked back. Don’t take my word for it, watch this short introduction to her here: https://alexrotasphotography.co.uk/about-me/

She has co-created a documentary film called “Younger” This documentary follows four women in their 60s, 70s and 80s as they train and compete in national and international athletics competitions. For all of them, training and competing in masters’ athletics is about being part of a supportive community, achieving personal goals, and living a purposeful life full of adventures and fun. In doing so, these women show an energy, joyful determination, and fulfilment in older age, that offers a powerful antidote to lazy stereotypes around ageing. Watch the trailer here:

No matter how many fillers, surgeries or other things some do to postpone the inevitable, we all of course will age but it does not have to define what we are capable of. I would love to live in a world where we stop hiding and start celebrating our wrinkles. It’s a privilege to age.

The last 2 episodes of Season 1 are really 2 old friends catching up. I met Cheryl when I started my Master's program in New Zealand. We were the only 2 women studying composition and we were both "foreigners". She proceeded me by 1 year and became a mentor to me. We bonded over our shared status and similar sense of humour. While I abandoned music as a paid profession, Cheryl has gone on to make a living in composition and conducting and we explore many of her pieces in these 2 episodes. For those in my network that know Cheryl, I hope you enjoy this trip down memory lane with us.

We've finally finished up Season 1 and the last episodes have been released. Episode 10 is with my good friends Peter Goes and Michelle Harvey. They are rad for so many reasons. They are the most hospitable and genuine people you will ever meet. They run a very successful consulting company in Australia, and have mastered "work/life integration" which we talk about in this episode. They had a big influence on my consulting career and are fantastically rad people to have as friends.
