What climbs, swims, flies and STINKS?
The hoatzin is a bird of the Amazon Rainforest that is basically a miniature brewery. Its gut contains unique microorganism that ferment leaves to extract nutrients. But as every sourdough baker knows, fermentation creates lots of gas…and the Hoatzin is constantly burping and farting creating a toxic smell cloud that has the added benefit of keeping predators from wanting to eat it!

Check out this Vintage Audubon Society pin!
Thanks to Moira who sent in the picture of this pin she found along with her story:
“Your kind mention of me on your podcast inspired a small quest to find the lapel pin I was given as a child. It was received during a talk Roger Tory Peterson gave in the mid-1960s. The evening session was in a small, basement room at the Smithsonian—the audience was probably only 20 people because there wasn’t a huge interest in topics like that back then.
On your podcast, you said it would be neat to see the pin I mentioned. I wasn’t sure I would ever see it again, but knew I wouldn’t have intentionally thrown it out because of how much that event meant to me as a child.
Thank you so much Moira, listeners out there feel free to chat with me anytime about birds!
