This week’s guest is Brian Songer, and his story is one you won’t soon forget.

For over 20 years, Brian lived as a functioning alcoholic—holding it together on the outside, while secretly battling addiction on the inside. It cost him more than he could have imagined. After losing his job due to alcohol still in his system, things spiraled. Within a year, he was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver… and nearly died as you can see in the photo he shared with us.

But that’s not where the story ends.

Brian is now the grateful recipient of a life-saving liver transplant, and more than that—he’s a changed man. He shares with raw honesty what addiction cost him, what grace gave him, and why he now lives with a whole new purpose.

We take a break this week on the Paragould Podcast, to replay an episode from July 1, 2022. That early episode of the Paragould Podcast was with Jerry Bellew: an MMA fighter and owner of Bellew Barber Shop.

Sadly, he was taken from us far too early, on May 14, 2025 at the age of 46. We mourn with his family and friends and hope that reairing this episode brings honor and remembrance to his story. Our original episode description:

Jerry Ballew joins us to talk about his fascinating journey that ultimately landed him in Paragould. After hanging out in the barber shops of Brooklyn, NY, moving to Houston, TX, spending time on an oil rig in the Gulf, and working as a private security contractor in Afghanistan, it was MMA that eventually brought him to our city.

From Addict to Advocate, Telly Roberts joined the Podcast to share with us the story of how she get involved in using and selling drugs, what finally got her clean, and how she's using her story to change lives. As a Peer Recovery Specialist, she helps men and women struggling with addiction find freedom. Today she spends her time helping 15-20 peers who are working their way through Drug Court.
