Notice that the road is elevated:

The Bodo-Bonny road in Rivers State, Nigeria, constructed by Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, traverses highly challenging swampy and marshy terrain, including low-lying areas with tidal movements and creek networks. Source: julius-berger.

Terrain Challenges:
The 37.9 km dual carriageway spans muddy soil conditions, thick forests, and a 7 km marshy stretch, necessitating extensive sand dredging (over 3 million cubic meters) and soil stabilization techniques like vertical drains and geotextiles.

Julius Berger elevated sections through sand-filled embankments raised up to three meters higher in areas like the Afa Creek bridge approach to match bridge heights and counter flooding risks. Source: julius-berger.

Construction Details:
The project includes 17 bridges (spanning 36 m to 713 m), 5,500 m of concrete road, and flexible pavements on embankments, addressing the first road link to Bonny Island amid difficult environmental factors. Now at 90.98% completion as of December 2025, it’s temporarily open for light vehicles daytime only, with full delivery targeted for March 2026. Source: guardian.
