Fresh COVID restrictions are being brought in across England after the government implemented its 'Plan B' in response to the emergence of the Omicron variant.

In September the government set out its plan for tackling coronavirus over the winter period, with a set of 'Plan B' measures to prevent the NHS "coming under unsustainable pressure".

Speaking at a Downing Street news briefing on 8 December, Boris Johnson said it was now the "proportionate and responsible thing to move to Plan B".

"It's become increasingly clear that Omicron is growing much faster than the previous Delta variant," the prime minister said.

"We can't yet assume that Omicron is less severe… and it could lead to a big to a big increase in hospitalisations and sadly deaths."

Those changes, which have now been expanded in light of the variant, are:

Reintroducing guidance to work from home, if you can, from 13 December

Legally mandating face masks in "most public indoor venues", including theatres and cinemas from 10 December, with exceptions "where it's not practical, including while eating, drinking, exercising or singing"

NHS COVID passes for nightclubs, unseated indoor venues with more than 500 people, unseated outdoor venues with more than 4,000 people, and any venue with more than 10,000 people

Daily testing for people identified as a contact of a coronavirus case - with isolation required only for people who test positive.

The Prime Minister’s Statement regarding the Leaked Footage of the party in Number 10, December 2020.

Boris Johnson is facing accusations of lying after senior No 10 officials were filmed joking about a lockdown Christmas party that Downing Street insists did not take place.

Johnson and his aides have repeatedly denied that the event, reportedly held for staff at No 10 in December last year, broke Covid rules or took place at all.

In the leaked video of a mock televised press briefing, an adviser to Johnson is seen joking with Allegra Stratton, the prime minister’s then press secretary, about “a Downing Street Christmas party on Friday night”.

The footage, obtained by ITV, was shot on 22 December 2020. The Friday before was 18 December, the date on which multiple sources have said there was a staff party inside Downing Street, which would have contravened strict Covid regulations in place at the time.

New work-from-home guidance and vaccine passports could be announced as early as today, according to government officials, as Cabinet ministers move to counter the omicron spread, writes Ben Riley-Smith.

A meeting of the ‘Covid-O’ Cabinet sub-committee is expected to take place today to discuss the measures, with a possible full Cabinet meeting and press conference later.

The timing of the move appears to have been sped up significantly in the past 12 hours, with government sources implying on Tuesday that no decisions would be taken until next week.

The Telegraph revealed today that the Cabinet discussed bringing in vaccine passports in a meeting on Tuesday, which split members around the table.

Michael Gove, the Communities Secretary, and Nadine Dorries, the Culture Secretary, both spoke out in favour of the move, according to multiple sources familiar with the meeting.

But Grant Shapps, the Transport Secretary, and Alistair Jack, the Scottish Secretary, are critical of the move and are understood to have made comments making that clear.

It is not yet clear when the work-from-home guidance or vaccine passports would come into effect if announced today or how far-reaching they would become.

The U.S. will push Germany to agree to stop the contested Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline if Russian President Vladimir Putin invades Ukraine, according to documents seen by Bloomberg and people familiar with the plans.

President Joe Biden’s administration is seeking a commitment from the new German government that it would halt the project under such circumstances, one of the people said, asking not to be identified talking about confidential discussions.

Biden held a high-stakes video call Tuesday with Putin, with the pipeline one of the measures being discussed by the U.S. and European allies as providing potential leverage with the Russian leader. That’s as he again masses troops near the Ukrainian border and the U.S. and NATO fret about the possibility of an invasion in the early part of next year. Putin has denied his intention is to start a war.

Other possible options under discussion include sanctions on Russian banks and exports of the country’s commodities. The aim is to agree on a package that is comprehensive, quick to implement and economically painful enough that it serves as a true deterrent.

The White House has confirmed it will stage a diplomatic boycott of the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, in the latest move that will further widen the rift in an already strained bilateral relationship.

“The Biden administration will not send any diplomatic or official representation to the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics and Paralympic Games, given the PRC’s ongoing genocide and crimes against humanity in Xinjiang and other human rights abuses,” press secretary Jen Psaki said from the briefing room podium on Monday.

The announcement comes two months before the games are to begin. American athletes are still expected to compete in the Olympics, despite the Biden administration not sending any representatives to Beijing.

“The athletes on Team USA have our full support,” Psaki said. “We will be behind them 100% as we cheer them on from home. We will not be contributing to the fanfare of the games.”

The US staged a full boycott of the Olympics was during the cold war in 1980, when the former president Jimmy Carter snubbed the Moscow summer Games along with 64 other countries and territories, after the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan the previous year.

The Soviet Union, in turn, protested against the US’s move by boycotting the 1984 Los Angeles summer Olympics with its allies.

Psaki said administration officials made Beijing aware of the move before Monday’s announcement. “We feel this sends a clear message,” she said.

Hours before the announcement, China said a diplomatic boycott of the Olympics would be “a stain on the spirit of the Olympic charter” and “sensationalist and politically manipulative”.

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson, Zhao Lijian, on Monday accused Washington of “hyping a ‘diplomatic boycott’ without even being invited to the Games”.

“I want to stress that the Winter Olympic Games is not a stage for political posturing and manipulation,” Zhao said. “It is a grave travesty of the spirit of the Olympic charter, a blatant political provocation and a serious affront to the 1.4 billion Chinese people.”

Zhao also threatened “resolute countermeasures” if a boycott was announced.

Biden to speak to Zelensky and allies before talks with Putin over Ukraine invasion fears.

There is approximately over 100k Russian Troops on the Ukraine Border, it is feared this is an invasion force.

Mr Biden will speak with Mr Putin on Tuesday as the US and Europe grow more concerned over Russia’s military buildup along its’ border with Ukraine.

President Biden will speak with Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelensky and leaders of key European allies in order to “coordinate his message” and go into his Tuesday video call with Russian president Vladimir Putin with “unity and strong transatlantic solidarity on the way forward,” a senior administration official said Monday.

The official said Mr Biden plans to raise America’s “deep concern” with Russia’s military buildup along its’ border with Ukraine when he speaks to Mr Putin, as well as “other critical issues “ such as “strategic stability, cyber and Iran’s nuclear program”.

“The President will conduct this discussion the same way he has with past discussions with Putin in a professional, candid, straightforward manner, where he will make clear — without any kind of rhetorical flourish or finger wagging — what the United States is prepared to do, both in respect to deterrence and in respect to diplomacy,” the official said.

In recent weeks, Russian forces have begun a buildup of troops and materiel along Ukraine’s eastern frontier that experts say is reminiscent of what preceded Russia’s February 2014 invasion of Crimea.

Self proclaimed “anti fascists” marched through the streets in Melbourne, Australia.

Whilst marching close together, they demanded stricter Covid-19 Restrictions, stricter penalties for breaking the restrictions and for being unvaccinated.

These “Anti Facists”, “anti nazi” marchers also can be held chanting “You anti vaxers can not hide””You have n***s on your side”. Nothing screams anti fascist more than searching for and rounding up people who exercise their right to choice.

We can all agree that we are anti far right, just as we are anti the far left. So I was delighted to read their signs saying “anti the far right”. They are quite literally banging against an open door but I support that message…… HOWEVER, there many many many other signs, ones that stated “Unite to fight the right”. Now this is outrageous and dangerous. Attacks have drastically increased recently on those that lean to the right on the political spectrum. This is a disgraceful message to be campaigning for. LITERALLY nothing says anti fascist more than demanding unification to fight those who have differing political views to you… fascists.

Conservative MPs in Canada sang the British National Anthem, God Save The Queen, while legislators were voting on a motion to congratulate Barbados on the election of their new President who has replaced The Queen as head of state.

The Speaker reminded MPs that singing was not permitted in the chamber.

Barbados has discussed becoming a republic for decades. In the summer of 2020, the Prime Minister, Mia Mottley, announced plans for the country to become a republic. In the early autumn of 2021, its parliament passed the necessary bills and on October 12th 2021, the country’s Governor General, Sandra Mason, was formally nominated as President.

On November 30th, the official handover of power took place at a ceremony in Bridgetown as midnight struck. The Royal Standard was lowered and the formal declaration of the transition to a republic took place. The Prince of Wales, as future Head of the Commonwealth, was invited to attend by the government of Barbados.

In his speech at the ceremony, the Prince spoke of new beginnings and acknowledged the wrongs of the past, saying ‘From the darkest days of our past and the appalling atrocity of slavery, which forever stains our history, people of this island forged their path with extraordinary fortitude.”

Charles watched as Dame Sandra Mason was sworn in as President.

Soon afterwards, President Mason said in her inaugural speech ”Republic Barbados has set sail on her maiden voyage….our country must dream big dreams and fight to realise them.”

Do you believe him? Do you think he should be criminally investigated?

During an interview with ABC aired on Thursday, Alec Baldwin stated that he was told that the gun in the “Rust” shooting was a “cold gun” and that he didn’t pull the trigger, but the gun went off after he let go of the hammer.

Baldwin said that he was told that the gun was a “cold gun” which “means there’s no charge in there. There could be dummy rounds.”

Baldwin also stated that he held the gun where he was told to, which ended up being “right below her armpit.”

Baldwin discussed how the firearm discharged. He said that he was instructed to c**k the gun and that he pulled the hammer back, and then when he let go of the hammer, the gun went off.

He added, “I didn’t pull the trigger. … I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them. Never. Never. That was the training that I had, you don’t point a gun at somebody and pull the trigger.”
