The 1934 Ford named “Saint Christopher” is designed and owned by Coby Gewertz. It was built by Bill Ganahl owner of South City Rod and Custom and painted by Joe Compani of Compani Color. At the 2023 Grand National Roadster Show, Bill Ganahl’s St. Christopher coupe, a ’33/’34 Ford, quickly stirred up excitement—and controversy—on social media. With bold stripes, an early Hemi engine, velocity stacks, zoomie exhausts, and a flawless stance, the car immediately caught HOT ROD editor-in-chief John McGann’s attention. He arranged a photoshoot with photographer Wes Allison, resulting in a stunning feature in HOT ROD magazine’s September 2023 issue, titled Dare to Be Different—a phrase rooted in the magazine’s history of celebrating unconventional builds.
The St. Christopher coupe went on to win Goodguys Hot Rod of the Year at the Nashville Nationals and is likely to rack up more accolades. While it may inspire a trend in striped paint jobs, McGann emphasizes that great hot rods come down to thoughtful part selection, craftsmanship, and unique aesthetics. HOT ROD will continue to showcase standout builds, regardless of style, as long as they push boundaries and demonstrate exceptional skill.
