This is the regimental band, 42nd United States Volunteer Infantry Regiment, in the Philippines, 1901, during the Philippine Insurrection (or Philippine War). This band is unique in U.S. Army history in that seventeen members (out of about twenty-four who served in the band at various times) were born in Italy. The men were all professional musicians and were specially recruited for this duty. Most had been in American less than two years before their enlistment. They served from October 1899 to June 1901, most of the time in the Philippines. I've listed all the band members below, with places of birth for the Italian men.
