Leesburg Installing School Zone Speed Cameras This Month
Starting August 21, Leesburg drivers who speed through school zones may find themselves caught on camera — and after a short grace period, facing a $100 fine.

The Leesburg Police Department is launching its new, state-approved School Zone Speed Safety Program just in time for the start of the school year. The goal: slow drivers down where kids and pedestrians are most at risk.

Here’s how it works: cameras will monitor school zones during the exact hours the flashing lights are on. If you’re over the posted speed limit, the system will snap photos and video. For the first 30 days, offenders will get a warning in the mail. After September 22, it’s a $100 ticket.

Police Chief Thea Pirnat says it’s about prevention, not punishment:

“Ensuring the safety of our students and residents is a top priority. This initiative is about changing driver behavior and making our streets safer, particularly in areas where children and other vulnerable road users are present.”

The camera locations weren’t picked at random. The department analyzed traffic speeds, car counts, and pedestrian crossings to find hot spots — not just near school entrances, but anywhere in town where heavy traffic and foot traffic overlap.

Camera locations:

Ball’s Bluff Elementary – Battlefield Parkway NE

John W. Tolbert Jr. Elementary / Harper Park Middle School – Potomac Station Drive NE

Loudoun County High School – Dry Mill Road SW and Catoctin Circle SW

Officers will still patrol school zones the old-fashioned way, but Chief Pirnat says the technology makes it possible to keep watch even when an officer isn’t there. Every violation will still be reviewed by an officer before a ticket is sent out.

With school back in session, it’s a good time to remember that those flashing lights mean slow down — not just for your wallet, but for the kids crossing the street.

Starting August 21, Leesburg drivers who speed through school zones may find themselves caught on camera — and after a short grace period, facing a $100 fine.

12 Loudoun V**e Shops Cited for Selling to Underage Customers — 5 Were Repeat Offenders
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office says too many local v**e and to***co shops are still selling to people who aren’t old enough to buy. An undercover sting operation found that 12 of the 31 stores tested in July made illegal sales to individuals under 21, and five of those shops had already been caught doing the same thing last year.

Deputies checked shops across the county, from Purcellville to Leesburg to Sterling, using the rules in Virginia Code § 18.2-371.2. The law bans selling to***co, ni****ne, or h**p products to anyone under 21.

A first-time violation comes with a $500 fine for the shop and $100 for the employee who made the sale. Do it again within three years, and the fine jumps to $2,500 — plus the state can pull the shop’s license altogether.

“It is deeply concerning that some businesses continue to disregard the law and the health of our young people,” Sheriff Mike Chapman said. “We will continue to hold violators accountable, including the loss of their license to do business in Loudoun County.”

Shops caught selling to an underage buyer:

AIO Smoke & V**e – Sterling (Pigeon Hill Dr.)

Ashburn Cigar & V**es (2nd offense) – Ashburn (Ashburn Shopping Plz.)

Diamond To***co & V**es – Lansdowne (Diamond Lake Dr.)

HUB – Sterling (Pigeon Hill Dr.)

Sterling Smoke & V**e (2nd offense) – Sterling (Enterprise St.)

To***co Flex – Purcellville (Main St.)

To***co Hut (2nd offense) – Ashburn (Ashbrook Commons Plz.)

To***co Hut – Ashburn (Church Rd.)

To***co King (2nd offense) – Sterling (Leesburg Pike)

To***co King & V**e – Sterling (Leesburg Pike)

To***co King & V**e (2nd offense) – Leesburg (Fieldstone Dr.)

To***co King & V**e – Leesburg (Market St.)

The Sheriff’s Office says enforcement is just one part of the work. Deputies also visit schools through D.A.R.E. and Virginia Rules programs, warning kids about va**ng and its health risks, and hold community forums for parents and teachers.

Penalties for Selling to Someone Under 21

First offense: $500 for the business, $100 for the employee.

Repeat offense (within 36 months): $2,500 for the business and possible license suspension or revocation.
