On January 12, 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto, the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous founder, issued the first transaction ever sent on the Bitcoin blockchain to long-time cryptographer and cypherpunk Hal Finney.
Satoshi Nakamoto transmitted 10 BTC to Hal Finney in block 170 of the cryptocurrency network for a transaction fee of 0 BTC. It's worth noting that at the time, blockspace was largely unused, and the cryptocurrency was almost worthless.
This is notable because Satoshi Nakamoto, the cryptocurrency's pseudonymous creator, was well-known for his privacy methods and appears to have disappeared from the crypto space in late 2010.
Hal Finney made the now-famous transaction after downloading the bitcoin software the day it was released. The funds transferred were worth next to nothing at the time, but the transaction confirmed that the BTC network worked and was secure.
It's worth noting that Hal Finney was among the first to adopt the flagship cryptocurrency and is credited with sending the first-ever bitcoin-related tweet on January 11, 2009, when he tweeted that he was "running bitcoin," which meant that he was running the bitcoin software.
