According to reports, after lightning struck and destroyed her home, Penrose filed a lawsuit seeking $100,000 in damages from God, arguing that the disaster was an act of divine intervention.

The case quickly attracted media attention because it raised an obvious legal problem: how do you serve court papers to God, and how could any judgment ever be enforced?

In some versions of the story, God failed to appear in court, resulting in a default judgment in Penrose's favor. However, winning a judgment and collecting money are very different things.

Since no court has a practical way to compel payment from god, she got no money.

According to popular accounts, lightning struck him again in 1924 while he was fishing, and a third time in 1930 while walking in a park. The final strike allegedly left him permanently disabled, and he died two years later.

What transformed the story from remarkable to legendary was what happened after his death.

In 1936, four years after he was buried, lightning reportedly struck his gravestone and split it apart. This detail turned Summerford into a symbol of extraordinary bad luck and helped his story spread around the world.
