Thankful to the brilliant, funny, inspiring, insanely talented man who generously shares his immense talent with all of us: Nano Stern and the incredible Vázquez, Menares, Recabarren Trio. Feeling incredibly grateful I got to see Nano Stern for the second time this year debuting his brand new album, ‘Refugio’. (Which is awesome, you should go listen to it!)

We need this light in the midst of the hate and terror.

I couldn’t help but get emotional when Nano dedicated his version of Víctor Jara’s ‘Luchín” to the children of Gaza.

He also reminded us that the coup which overthrew Allende in Chile (and led to Víctor Jara’s death) was ordered by Henry Kissinger and the CIA which makes the soldiers patrolling Georgetown, the place where the founders of the CIA who were the architects of that brutal foreign policy lived, no less unnerving and pathetic but adds a heavy dose of perverse irony.

Despite the horror we can always appreciate beauty (aun creo en la belleza
)
On we go, falling into the future, looking at the past
.
Gracias,

(PS. it was also Chilean Independence Day. Happy birthday, Chile!)

On this day 52 years ago a man who dedicated his life to sang for the working people of his country, justice and peace was brutally murdered by the Chilean military after the September 11 coup.

In his last song written while he and 5000 others were detained in a Santiago soccer stadium he wrote:

“How hard it is to sing
when I must sing of horror.
Horror which I am living,
horror which I am dying.
To see myself among so much
and so many moments of infinity
in which silence and screams
are the end of my song.”

Víctor Jara’s song did not end. It still soars and we still remember. We add to the clamor and continue to demand the fundamental right Víctor fought for: el derecho de vivir en paz

This is what we mean when we say nunca mĂĄs!
So many feelings and layers of meaning here. For twenty years Brazil had a military dictatorship which overthrew JoĂŁo (Jango) Goulart, that the US helped to install. Today they convicted a former president for attempting to subvert the will of the people and on September 11 (52 years after the coup that overthrew Allende in Chile) of all days.

ÂĄNo perdĂłn, ni olvido!
On this day in 1973 the government of Salvador Allende in Chile was violently overthrown by the military with full backing by the US.

With gunfire audible in the background President Allende delivered his last speech.

At the end he says:

“Workers of my country, I have faith in Chile and its destiny. Other men will overcome this dark and bitter moment when treason seeks to prevail. Keep in mind that, much sooner than later, great avenues will again open, through which will pass the free man, to construct a better society.
Long live Chile! Long live the people! Long live the workers!
These are my last words, and I am certain that my sacrifice will not be in vain, I am certain that, at the very least, it will be a moral lesson that will punish felony, cowardice, and treason.“

Glory to the courageous and honest Salvador Allende and all those that died on 9/11/73 and in the 17 years of dictatorship that followed!

May their dreams continue to live on!

You know music is really worthwhile when it gets you in trouble with the FBI.

I’ll remember your kindness, your humor and your conscience. You immediately made me feel at ease, you encouraged me, cared to answer my questions. You were deeply kind.

You had the courage to make music that spoke to realities most of your contemporaries wouldn’t touch.

We’ll miss you, Eddie

Today a great Latin American leader died, Uruguay’s Pepe Mujica.

Many of us were aware of Pepe’s illness this past year but his physical death is nonetheless met with a sense of deep sadness and surprise. It is difficult to surmise the legacy and meaning of this great man in just a few words but I will say a few words. He was a true humanist, a man of unparalleled integrity, of truth and deep humanity. The ‘poorest president in the world’, who donated 90% of his presidential salary to charity. He was a person worthy of the term ‘leader’. He was a compañero to his people and to many around the world. He was hope embodied. He shows us what we should expect and demand from leadership.

What better advice can we, the youth of today embrace than these immortal words:

“Nothing is worth more than life itself. Fight for happiness! Happiness is giving meaning and direction in life, and not letting anyone steal it from you. There is no recipe for this; it is here, in your conscience.”

We miss you already ,
Gracias, compañero!

I never thought I’d say this but i am genuinely sad about the death of Pope Francis.
He was a symbol of progress and I think a profoundly good person. He consistently spoke up for Palestinians as well as the poor and oppressed of the world as well as consistently denouncing right wing populism.

May he rest in peace

When are we going to learn?
When are we going to stop this?
When are we going to realize human rights can’t be suspended, not ever?

I can’t stand this cruelty and indifference.

A reminder of the good and beauty of humanity in the midst of the darkness. I got to see the incredible Nano Stern perform live in DC last night.

His music, overflowing with social commentary and the bittersweet joy of life helped to restore my faith in humanity.

It was absolute magic to hear some of Víctor Jara’s songs performed live along with Nano’s own brilliant (and I do mean absolutely brilliant and breathtaking) compositions including several that speak about indigenous rights in Chile and the ongoing fight for water rights in southern Chile. I was surprised to learn about the Celtic influence that comes by way of Galicia that is found in Chile as well. Fascinating on so many levels!

His rendition of Víctor Jara’s composition, ‘Luchin’ brought me to tears as did his invocation for peace for all that inhabit this planet from “Ukraine to Gaza”. There were a few much needed jokes about the orange menace currently taking a wrecking ball to civilian life here in the US who as Nano reminded us all, is also an immigrant.

We are all connected, we are all one, no matter if our viewpoints diverge. We cannot ever allow of humanity to be taken nor our compassion for others, this was beautifully exemplified here. I am once again filled with stubborn hope because life is indeed beautiful and a gift.

I am reminded once again that humans are wonderful! I am full of thanks and gratitude. This is the beauty and good that we are capable of. Music heals as does laughter and art.

Thank you for your light in the midst of this dark moment
