Personalized House ๐Ÿฅ€๐Ÿก in Jakartha, Indonesia.

Architects: Gets Architects
Area: 1030 m2

One of the client's foremost requests for the Steric Spes was a house that offers both shade and seclusion, without compromising natural light and airflow. Situated on a west-facing site, the design responds to the brief with a nuanced and responsive facade: a secondary skin of cream-colored fiber-cement breeze-block, which is composed of a grid-like pattern across the house. This permeable facade filters harsh western sunlight while facilitating air circulation throughout the house by acting as a protective veil. Moreover, it screens from the surrounding urban context and also creates a private space that is further set back to achieve a sense of retreat and calmness.

Material continuity and tectonic coherence are essential to the architectural language of the Steric Spes. The cream-colored fiber-cement breeze-block elements continue across the upper three levels, forming volumes that are stacked and shifted, each leaning toward the right side. Not only does this dynamic composition allow 90% of the house to remain detached from the neighboring structure, but it also enhances the sense of interplay while maintaining formal cohesion.

The result is a house that breathes, maintaining thermal comfort and luminosity with an ever-changing shadowplay throughout the day. Moreover, many areas are shaded by cantilevered 'canopies' as a result of the right-leaning stacked massing above on each level. Aesthetically, the perceived lightness of the upper three volumes is accentuated through the deliberate use of contrast materials and color at the base.

By: MMGS Architects |

Description: Designed by Godridge and Shan, a father and son combination, the Tara House is a 3-storey residential building sited in Nawala, a suburb of Colombo, on an 8 perch land (200sqm). This home was designed for Lavan Sornarajah, a Sri Lankan born British Citizen with a dual citizenship who had engaged with us previously for the award-winning renovation of the studio apartment.
The house is structured as two cuboids, with a less voluminous centre divide. The main spaces are conceived within the cuboids and connecting spaces within the divide where the rear of the residence faces the open marshes of Nawala.

Upon entering the house, one walks directly into the open pavilion and is instantly absorbed by the view across the semi-outdoor pavilion. The central pavilion floor is finished with โ€œboraluโ€ stones that inherits a sense of the outdoors within an indoor space. The rawness of the steel structure and exposed brick faรงade adds to this vivacious play and combines with the breath-taking views to amalgamate the home into a relaxing space.

The design pays tribute to the rugged earthiness of the surroundings through the use of exposed brick supported by a steel structure. The rear face of the dwelling faces views of the open marsh maintaining a romantic visual relationship with its natural environment at every level through the use of large steel framed windows and open floor plans.

House of Noufal in Pazhayangadi, Kerala, India ๐Ÿƒโœจ๏ธ

By
The sloping roof, visibly touching the ground grants the house a unique form and posture, at the same time shade the house from heavy rain and harsh sunlight. Outer walls beneath the massive, sloped roof were given lengthy openings with the space inside divided into two by a courtyard at the center, giving proper cross ventilation and natural lighting.
As for building materials , Indigenous tiles were sourced for the roofing and steel frames as structural support. Wooden louvered doors in Kerala Traditional style in the facade and concrete flooring with inlay works were done, old furniture was sourced and newly made with traditional detailing.

Description : The site located in a leafy suburb with detached houses in Bangalore is south-facing with two sausage trees on the footpath abutting the road. The positioning of the building and its internal zoning were dictated by these trees and the site orientation. A direct relationship between the inside and outside of the house is established due to two longitudinal zones of spaces located in the east and west.

The zone on the west houses the programs that need enclosure and privacy while the zone on the east is predominantly open allowing for axial connection from the rear of the house to the front.ย  The eastern zone is sectionally modulated to allow for lateral connection between various levels of the house.

โ€œModscapeโ€ blends modern minimalism with lush green surroundings. Located in a semi-urban neighborhood, the home embraces nature through angled volumes, open spaces, and carefully integrated courtyards.

Thoughtfully built on a sloping site, the design respects natural levels and existing trees, incorporating native landscaping, cross-ventilation, and daylight to reduce environmental impact. A sculptural spiral staircase and high ceilings add both elegance and functionality to the living spaces.

Materials were selected for resilience and local availability during the 2022โ€“2023 economic crisis, using a palette of cement-rendered floors, brick, timber, and glass.

Modscape reflects how architecture can create comfort, calm, and connection to place, while making responsible choices in both design and construction.
