Zoe is 7 today! Happy Birthday to my beautiful girl! I have to postpone the celebration for when I am feeling better. For now she is taking care of me. I am so blessed to have her.

Zoe is a 6 year old Australian Labradoodle and is an allergen detection service dog for me. I have also trained Zoe to do deep pressure therapy for post Covid POTS (postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome) and small fiber neuropathy as well as retrieve items.

October is Dysautonomia Awareness Month. Dysautonomia is when your Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) doesn’t work properly. The ANS manages all of your body system processes you don’t think about. That includes your blood pressure, body temperature, breathing, digestion, heart rate, sweating and much more. With dysautonomia, one or more of these processes do not work as they should.

There are several types of dysautonomia. The most common are postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), orthostatic hypotension and vasovagal syndrome.

Dysautonomia Awareness Month is an effort to help more people recognize and learn about the condition.

Today is day! Zoe and I are proud to be ambassadors for This is a nonprofit organization set up by the Debbs family in honor of their son Oakley who sadly lost his life to a nut allergy. Oakley loved his red sneakers and the family uses them as a powerful symbol for increased food allergy education and awareness. We are wearing our red sneakers today to spread food allergy awareness. On this last before spring, I am reflecting back on what Zoe and I accomplished this winter. We have successfully completed our allergen detection training (although maintenance training never ends). It has been a long road and so happy I stuck with it. Zoe has surpassed my expectations.

Zoe and I went to a training class yesterday. We haven’t been there for a few months and it showed. I was having trouble getting her to focus on me at times as she was more interested in some new dogs in the class. She did impress me near the end of class when one of the dogs walked by her while she was in a down stay and she didn’t get up. It’s always good to go back to basics to keep up on your training.
