In January 2024, amid the ongoing war in Sudan, photographer Mosab Abushama was asked to document a friend’s wedding in Omdurman—a city under constant airstrikes. “Despite the clashes and random shelling, the wedding was a simple but joyous occasion with family and friends,” he shares. The war, which began in April 2023, forced him from his childhood home, yet this moment was a powerful reminder that joy can persist even in the darkest times.

In Nigeria, the LGBTQI+ community faces legal persecution, discrimination, and violence. Held in a secret location, “Heavenly Bodies: Notes on Fola Francis” was the third edition of the Lagos ballroom Pride celebration—one of the largest drag ballroom events in the country. The 2024 series honored Fola Francis, a trans icon and activist. Despite the risks, the event was an electrifying space for love, self-expression, and resistance.

Lake Kivu, which lies between Rwanda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, holds many stories. While its serene waters sustain fishing communities, they also mask an uncertain future. Climate change, plastic pollution, and the discovery of methane gas reserves threaten this delicate ecosystem. Mukoni’s work explores the fragile relationship between people and nature—one of dependence, exploitation, and deep reverence.
