šØ Sony claims we killed the physical game disc by switching to digital. But if you follow the money, the truth is way more sinister.
When Sony announced the end of physical PlayStation game production for January 2028, they blamed changing consumer habits. They pointed at the fact that 85% of us buy digital. But they left out the biggest catalyst: the 2026 Blu-ray patent expirations.
Once those industry patents expire, the cost to print physical discs drops. Under normal market conditions, major publishers like EA and Ubisoft would use this to demand cheaper manufacturing rates from Sony.
Instead of letting publishers win that leverage and negotiate lower fees, Sony is using its massive market dominance to wipe out physical discs altogether. By forcing everyone into a digital-only ecosystem, they kill the used-game market, eliminate retail competition from Amazon or local shops, and lock in a permanent, non-negotiable 30% cut of every single game sold.
We didn't kill the disc. Sony is destroying it to protect their monopoly before the patents run out.
What's your take? Will you go digital-only or switch to Nintendo/Xbox?
