P&M Records proudly announces a digital re-issue of an iconic album from the acclaimed jazz ensemble Slow Poke featuring "Slow Poke at Home" with bonus tracks.
Co-led by Michael Blake on tenor saxophone, David Tronzo on slide guitar, Tony Scherr on bass and Kenny Wollesen on drums, Slow Poke carved a unique path in the NY downtown jazz scene. Departing from the prevailing avant-garde trends, Slow Poke embraced melody and soulful expression, earning praise for their refreshing approach.
"At Home," the band's debut album, originally self-released on CD in 1998, defied categorization and quickly sold out its initial pressing, fueling the band's grassroots momentum. It featured five tracks, including Michael Blake's compositions "Afro Blake" and "Dry Socket," as well as covers of songs by Duke Ellington, Neil Young, and Eddie Harris. “At Home" was recorded by Scherr in his Brooklyn living room using only a few mics and an analog tape machine. A few years later the album was mastered by legendary engineer Gene Paul.
Not included on the CD release but included here are three bonus tracks. A few months after the “At Home” session, the band returned to Tony’s house to record Blake’s "Make Out Machine" and the ballad "The Saturday Option," penned by Kurt Wagner of Lambchop fame. The Burt Bacharach tune, "Long Day, Short Night," is the only track in this collection captured in a recording studio during their 1998 session for Intuition Music.
"Slow Poke at Home plus bonus tracks" will be available for download and streaming on all major platforms Friday September 20th 2024. You can pre-save at this link
