It’s here! Our second annual Activism issue has dropped. This issue is all about the people across the African Diaspora who are working to reimagine our world for the better. We are thrilled to have Ayesha and Stephen Curry on the cover. Inside, we speak with the Currys about their Eat. Learn. Play. Foundation, which is doing critical work around food access, literacy, and wellness for children and families in their adopted hometown of Oakland, California.

This is our largest issue to date, full of inspiring stories of people who are having a real impact all over the world. Learn about Egyptian fashion house, Reform Studio, the brand that is turning Egypt’s plastic crisis into couture handbags and luxury home decor, marrying traditional weaving techniques with a new, recycled material — Plastex. Feel empowered by the history of Black August and how this became the month to rededicate ourselves to social justice. Explore the blueprint for real social change through the legacy of the Black Panther Party and the free services they provided to Black communities all over the nation — from health clinics to food pantries and other essential services — combatting racist oppression with communal solidarity. Then find a bit of clarity about the current state of America as we trace the rise of today’s conservative movement — which has been 70 years in the making — to strategies co-opted from the Civil Rights Movement to degrade the rights and deny the citizenship of people in the United States and around the world.

This issue is a testament to Black culture — not just its aesthetics, sounds or style, but its function as one of America’s most democratic institutions. Throughout these pages you will read how, in every generation, Black culture has been a steward of America’s promise of democracy. Time and again, we have breathed new life into the Constitution; ended the evils of slavery and segregation; pushed this country to deliver its most progressive amendments to protect the life and liberty of all citizens; sacrificed for civil rights; lead the fight for gender equality; and have stood at the forefront of LGBTQ+ rights. In this issue you’ll see that there is nothing we can’t do or overcome when we work together in community and solidarity.

We may have coined a new term — “Black Impressionism.” Specifically, Black Impressionism highlights those Black artists of today and yesterday who have captured the visual impression of Black life through brushstroke, light, movement and landscape.

We have curated a host of Black Impressionist pieces in the fine art collection at AphroChic Home, including these stunning landscape paintings by a man we would consider one of the fathers of Black Impressionism — Henry Ossawa Tanner.

When we lived in Philly, we used to see Tanner’s work at PAFA, and fell in love with his moody paintings. Today, we are thrilled to announce that these framed prints of his landscapes are exclusively available at AphroChic Home.

Where can you find a sustainably made pink sofa that celebrates the Black legacy of architecture and design, and that will have your space looking snatched? Why, at AphroChic Home of course!

Check out our Norma Pink Bouclé Curved Sofa named in honor of Norma Merrick Sklarek, pioneering Black, female architect of the early 20th century. While the Met Gala red carpet was a bit underwhelming this year (all that red and black 🥱), we were still deeply inspired by the Met’s Superfine: Tailoring Black Style exhibit and its exploration of the Black Dandy. So much so, that we decided to do a little research to understand the roots of the aesthetic. That journey resulted in the article, “The Black Dandy: The Met Gala’s 2025 Theme Begs A Closer Look at Europe’s Fashion History,” in Issue No. 20 of AphroChic magazine. It’s a look at a Black sartorial history in Europe that goes as far back as the Moors in Spain. And highlights how, historically, Black fashion aesthetics have long set trends in Europe and beyond: https://www.yumpu.com/en/document/read/70572138/aphrochic-magazine-issue-no-20/36

Have you been wondering what’s behind America’s recent politics? So have we. In Issue No. 20 of AphroChic magazine we take a hard look at one answer: the pseudo-science of eugenics. A cornerstone of modern racism, eugenics is a driving force behind many current actions - from destroying DEI initiatives, to a federal takeover of a majority Black city:

Eugenics. It’s a word that’s on everyone’s lips, circulating all over social media right now. The creation of this 19th century pseudo-science was a major stepping stone in the development of modern racism. And as the concept took root around the world, the power of the American eugenics movement led some of the nations wealthiest to financially and ideologically back the growth of the N**i Party in Germany. So what is eugenics? How did it begin? And how does eugenic thought continue to shape the attitudes and politics that surround Black lives today? We dive into all of this and more in Issue No. 20 of AphroChic magazine: https://aphrochic.com/issue-20
