In this lab, women writer-directors work together to create everything they need to set up their narrative feature projects – loglines, synopses, pitches, lookbooks, reels, websites, schedules, budgets, and pitch decks. Plus they become part of a creative community and gain the support and confidence to get their projects made.
Covid precipitated the move online and it’s been great. Zoom has meant that we’ve been able to include filmmakers (and filmmaking teams) from all over the world, it’s much easier to share our work, it’s allowed us to bring in more guests and instructors, and we now have a Producers Panel that meets at the end of each lab and personally reviews all the materials the filmmakers have created and suggests next best steps.
This past year saw several new features and proof of concept shorts shot by our alums including Cinder Chou’s feature Artist Unknown, Brooke Berman’s feature Ramona at Midlife, Gabriella Moses’ feature Boca Chica, Eugina Gelbelman’s feature The White Goddess, and Deja Bernhardt’s proof-of-concept short Hawaiian Sugar – for which she was awarded a grant covering her entire budget when she submitted the materials she developed in the lab.
So the lab is doing what we’d always hoped it would – it’s equipping women with the skills, tools, and community they need to get projects financed, made and out in the world.
