In December / Jan I had the opportunity to experience the infamous Reef Trip run by UNSW Dive Club with a group of mates 🐢
When I first heard about the trip I was intrigued.. When I learned it was off the grid with no phone reception, I was hooked and signed up 🤘🏻
We loaded everything we’d need for three weeks onto a barge and made the 8 hour trip across the ocean from Gladstone on the mainland to Lady Musgrave Island, a small coral cay on the southern tip of the Great Barrier Reef. No shops, no deliveries, no phone reception. Just 32 brave souls living on a tiny island in the middle of the ocean all by ourselves 😱
Everything had to come with us, personal gear, tents, food, dive gear, petrol, cooking equipment, medical supplies, radios, an air compressor to fill dive tanks and our own fully equipped dive boat, everything required to live out there 🏝️
Zero deliveries to the island, so enough food to feed 32 people for 3 weeks, the only exception, fresh seafood that free divers caught spearfishing 🤤
Thanks to some absolute legends on the trip we had fresh seafood and sashimi almost every day, insane. Getting to see the free divers and spearfishers in action was amazing, these guys are incredibly talented and knowledgeable & kept us so well fed 🐟
Our home beach, where we pitched our tents sat right on the edge of an incredible coral lagoon, protected by the reef and absolutely teeming with sea life just metres from the shore. Surrounded by a tonne of sharks, manta rays, eagle rays, turtles & so much more 🦈
We slept just next to the beach in the densely packed forest full of bird life and some pretty incredible nature. My personal favourite was the giant centipedes, alien serpent creatures equal parts fascinating and terrifying, I loved them! 🐉😍
Eternally grateful for getting to experience this and share it with a fantastic group of humans.
The organisation, planning and knowledge that went into making this possible is honestly mind-blowing 🙌🏻
Perfect opportunity to step away from work, put the phone down, spend time with great people and learn more about the ocean & nature 🌎
These are some of my favourite snaps from the trip ☺️✌🏻
